Anyone have any thoughts on how to choose a naturopathic doctor? I haven't been to the doc in over 7 years and am in reasonably good health. What questions do I ask and how do I know if they're any good? I'm assuming it's like massage or chiropractic... you have some outstanding ones and then some that are just practicing.

I'm interested mostly in having everything checked to make sure I'm not headed for problems down the road. I also specifically am interested in having a neurotransmitter panel done, having my blood work done, having an adrenal and thyroid panel done.

Thoughts and opinions?

After going to a couple of different ones, I'd personally ask what their basic philosophy is and see if it makes sense to me. I'd want someone very interested in the work of Weston A Price since that was introduced to me by a wonderful naturopath (who moved away) and I'd want to continue with someone of that mindset. I prefer someone who has products in their office to sell since I hate chasing all over to find some recommended product.

At the first appointment, that should be an hour, I'd want to have questions asked by the doc about ALL areas of my health, even the uncomfortable subjects. Emotional health, sex life, poop, etc. They are supposed to be holistic, after all.

And I'd want to make sure I "clicked" with the doc. I wouldn't go back if the first visit didn't impress me. Not with results, of course, that is too soon, but with the level of interest and the spark of intelligence in the doctor's eyes.

I made an appointment with a local one that several people I know see and have great things to say about. The first appointment was an hour like Free said and covered everything including a chance for me to bring up the specific areas I had concerns and questions about. Since we did click I didn't try another. Making that first appointment was the best thing I've ever done for both myself and DS!
