I love kefir.I never tried the grains. I have always bought this store stuff:

http://www.lifeway.net

I saw they sell kefir for $15 to make your own,but not sure how it would be compared to what you are getting.I love that the kefir I buy has so many healthy gut bacteria.I consider it a medicne for good health, and make sure the kids get some.Dd loves it,but ds takes it like a nasty dose of otc medicine, lol.

Have you made your first batch yet?

I have only made yogurt at home.

I have been making milk kefir for a while now thanks to BBH and Freemotion, but these grains I just got are water kefir. It is basically the same as milk, but you use sweetened water with the grains. The way I have been doing it is a double ferment--just sweetened water for the first ferment, then strain out the grains and for the second ferment, I added shredded gingerroot to the liquid, and fermented again. It tastes almost exactly like gingerale. The only difference is it wasn't quite sweet enough, but I added some stevia to make it a bit sweeter. It is awesome. I am still perfecting the process to see how much sugar I need to add to make it just like gingerale. Then I will try different flavours. and I agree about it being a medicine for good health. If you want something to drink other than water, this and kombucha are the choices. Milk kefir, we usually strain to make it kefir cheese, and then use the whey for lactofermenting.
