I just read this online and I am so angry I don't know what to do. So, I thought I would just show you why I am angry. In the following, we learn that the health care bill which is being voted on this weekend provides for a HUGE fine AND jail time if you don't have the level of health insurance that the government says you ought to have. As is noted in the end of the article, the premiums for that insurance are $15,000 a year for a family of four. If you don't maintain your health insurance, you can be fined up to $250,000 AND jailed for five years.

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD---PEOPLE WERE APPLAUDING THE RHETORIC THAT SAID "We will make sure EVERY American has health insurance.", without realizing the ramifications. I am about to explode.

Anyway, here's the text:

JCT Confirms Failure to Comply with Insurance Mandate Can Lead to 5 Years in Jail
Friday, November 06, 2009

Today, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Dave Camp (R-MI) released a letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirming that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land people in jail. The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain acceptable health insurance coverage and who choose not to pay the bills new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.

Key excerpts from the JCT letter appear below:

H.R. 3962 provides that an individual (or a husband and wife in the case of a joint return) who does not, at any time during the taxable year, maintain acceptable health insurance coverage for himself or herself and each of his or her qualifying children is subject to an additional tax. [page 1]

If the government determines that the taxpayers unpaid tax liability results from willful behavior, the following penalties could apply [page 2]

Criminal penalties

Prosecution is authorized under the Code for a variety of offenses. Depending on the level of the noncompliance, the following penalties could apply to an individual:

Section 7203 misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.

Section 7201 felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years. [page 3]

When confronted with this same issue during its consideration of a similar individual mandate tax, the Senate Finance Committee worked on a bipartisan basis to include language in its bill that shielded Americans from civil and criminal penalties. The Pelosi bill, however, contains no similar language protecting American citizens from civil and criminal tax penalties that could include a $250,000 fine and five years in jail.

According to the Congressional Budget Office the lowest cost family non-group plan under the Speakers bill would cost $15,000 in 2016.

If you don't want to start an arguement don't post politically charged statements like this one.

There's nothing wrong with voicing your outrage over what is happening in Washington.

I'm not too happy that this bill might pass with the broken promise that any bills will be online for 72 hours before a vote....

I'm not very happy that this bill will provide public funding for abortion.

No matter what your stance on abortion, it is wrong for our tax dollars to pay for them.

On a website entitled "sufficentself". com, you'd think there would me more of an outrage!

Sufficent self....NOT government-sufficed or government subsidized self!

DianeB: I do not consider it a politically charged post. In fact, I was very careful to edit out any words that might ruffle political feathers. This is something that is most likely going to happen in the next 48 hours. It affects all Americans, not those of one political stripe or another. We have no recourse against it. I am extremely upset by that. Why aren't you?

The purpose of this forum is discussion of self-sufficiency. I do not make much more than $15,000 a year. How can I pay for these premiums? It is a very, very serious concern to me.

Never said you couldn't or shouldn't post how you feel about the healthcare bill. It's a free country and you can do what you want. I was pointing out the inconsistency of your title and your post. Healthcare is obviously a debate that insights peoples strongest passions.

This is not a political discussion, Diane. It expresses specifically my PERSONAL concerns over PERSONALLY having to spend $15,000 a year on health insurance premiums, or go to jail. The fact that some people seem to blatantly politicize things which do not need to be politicized is just the argument I wished to avoid. I don't care WHO puts this kind of action in place...it is VERY scary to me.

I do not want to go to jail if I don't buy insurance. Plain talk. No politics at all. I don't want to do it. If you do, and you wish to discuss why it is okay with you, please feel free. Doesn't matter which side of the aisle a person is on, if they are willing to pay that kind of money, that's fine by me. I will simply be unable to do it. Thus, I will be fined and jailed. I dont' like that.

yes it is a politically charged post. and yes it could easily start problems.

the kind where people hit the report button cause they "can"t take" the others point of view on this subject....and unnecessarily get another poster in trouble or banned from threads.

sure everyone says post your view, then they get upset when you don't agree with them.

You don't like what might happen in the heath care bill? Glad to know your opinion but nope, I ain't taking this bait in this thread.

of course that is just my opinion on the subject and I know I will be cringing when I read some of the responses.

Unfortunately, considering the source of your outrage, there is no way this can not turn political. Not raining on your parade, just stating the obvious. ;)
My $.02 worth is that I am EXTREMELY outraged at what our "leaders" are doing to us. The person shoving this bill down our throats, has broken promise after promise after promise. That in and of itself should be grounds for bringing charges of treason. I personally believe it to be unconstitutional to force citizens to buy into this "plan".

While we allow more political discussions here on SS (while still expecting everyone to maintain a respectful tone) the title of this thread set the tone for the discussion - I was taken aback by it. I'm going to close this thread as it won't come to any good end. Lldychf2k, doesn't mean I don't agree with you.
