So, after doing some more research on bi-polar, I think I'm going to try to incorporate some seafood into my diet. About the only thing that I can tolerate eating is popcorn shrimp and long john silver's fish. I can't stand fishy stuff. Even a faint taste or smell of fish makes me want to purge my tummy. I can't even cook it if it's stinky, and leave the house when someone eats tuna. So, if anyone knows of anything that might fit into my diet, please, please let me know!

Noseplugs?

Seriously, I don't care much for seafood. I do love tuna sandwiches, LJS fish planks and popcorn shrinp, as you do. For me, the seafood is just a vehicle to assist me in consuming vast quantities of fried breading.

But I do make a mean seafood lasagna. Make a thick white chowder with whatever fish doesn't make you nauseous, and I include minced shrimp as well, layer it with cooked lasagna noodles and a cheese sauce made from cream cheese, eggs, cream, sauteed mushrooms, salt, pepper and sauteed leeks. Last layer is chowder. Bake for about 45 minutes.

Fish will not smell fishy if it is fresh. If the fish you are looking at in the ice case smells like fish, don't buy it.

Sole fillets will practically disintegrate if you cook them long enough! But if that's not okay, you can saute a thin fresh fillet in butter, add lemon and parsley and it's really kinda not poisonous.

Salmon can be pretty good too. Maybe even in a patty form, like a crab cake. Oh, and crab cakes can be decent too. Of course, they are fried!!!

How about taking fish oil capsules?

Oooooooooo I love Sole, grilled 3 min or so each side, and just served with lemon! DELISH - its my favorite fish of all.

My son is our seafood eater, he just loves it. Clam chowder being his fav, but he will eat just about anything from the sea.

I'll look for some recipe's tomorrow..

If you have bipolar disorder (not so affectionately called "brain cooties" by me and some of my mentally interesting friends and relatives), you should have your vitamin D level checked. Vitamin D has a big effect on the brain.

If you can't seem to eat that much seafood, fish oil pills may help. I know quite a few people who were helped by the fish oil while they were waiting for their meds to kick in. Enteric coated ones will help you avoid the dreaded "fish burps". You can also freeze the pills. This helps them get further down the system before they breakdown so you avoid those icky burps.

Here is a recipe I love because it is so easy...

I second taking a high quality fish oil rather than force yourself to smell what you cannot stand. We take a sockeye salmon oil and they do have a slight smell but not horrible (kids plug their noses) Just make sure you get a good quality oil.

Here is what we use, notice you can get the Vitamin D that WZ mentioned in the oil.

I agree with wifezilla on this one. Forcing yourself to eat something that you really don't like is not going to be a successful venture :/

Also eating processed fast food is not likely to be a help, I would avoid that. You are not going to pick up enough benefits to outweigh the negatives.

Shark is a nice mild fish if you want to give it a try. marinate it in a little olive oil, fresh lemon juice garlic and herbs. I woudl also suggest grilling outside since you are sensitive to fishy smells.

Hi Betta! I'm a huge seafood lover, but like you, I cannot STAND fishy taste/smell. I'm bad enough that I will rarely order fish at a restaurant, most of the time I have to catch it myself so I know it is fresh.
J's dad taught me a frying fish method that sounds weird but is fantastic. Get your fillets, and instead of using an egg wash, rub them thoroughly with mustard. Then roll them in your breadcrumbs, and fry away. I don't care for mustard, and I love this method! You can't taste the mustard at all, it cooks away, but you also get next to zero fishy-eew :D

Dace, can I respectfully disagree about shark meat? It's not harvested in a sustainable way at all. Here's a great resource for finding out what's most sustainable :)

Very good point....I was not thinking sustainable, just mild! Thank you for pointing out my ignorance :p I really am not much of a fish buyer/cooker/eater!

Well, I will admit that I've had shark and it is *delicious* :hide

A friend of mine is big into ocean conservation and she sent me that link a couple years ago. I've found it useful sometimes.
And I was not saying anyone is ignorant, I'm not mean. :frow

No, you didn't call me ignorant, I did!

Really I haven't bothered to learn about sustainable fish because I never buy fish....much to Hubby's dismay

I do appreciate the correction and the link....i don't want to be giving bad advice!
