:D Hello everyone, let me re-introduce myself...

As you can see from the name, I'm Pioneer Girl....I own a house in Illinois (in the country) and my job currently has me on the road 11 months out of the year. I used to have a garden, chickens, dogs, etc, but had to relinquish those to others in order to work. :(

Anyway, although I'm still on the road, and not able to be remotely SS, I decided to return because DH and I are tossing around an idea.

We have seriously been looking into purchasing our own small, private island. We've been researching the whole thing, and they aren't as terribly expensive as one might think.

Anyway, if we did, we would be COMPLETELY SS.....I mean water wheel, cooking over fire, using what is there to build a house, no gas, no electricity, none of that. Growing, hunting, catching our own food, etc. Of course, it would take at least a year of work for the garden to produce, and to get things in order. Plus, I want to be about an hour's boat ride to the mainland. (Gotta get my mail somewhere!).

So without rambling on about it all, I thought I'd check back in with SS and share my ideas, pick your brains, and just chat!

:)

O MI GOSH HELLOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just thinking about you the other day! I was hoping we'd hear from you again!!!!

I've really missed your posts!

And your own island?!

HOW FREAKING AWESOME WOULD THAT BE AND I'D BE SOOOOOOO JEALOUS.

But what about weather, like tropical storms, etc.

And where exactly would the small island be? Off Florida? off another country? off Hawaii?? off California or the New England States? Would your island be warm all year round or would you have a winter type???

What government laws would you have to answer to, if any? and are you the only ones going to be living on your own island???

:D Wow...and island lol just wow!

Welcome back. You don't really know me as I've become more active in your absence.

I'm thinking a island in the Great Lakes or a place like Puget Sound. I bet some of those are pretty reasonably priced and you wouldn't have to deal with tropical things or foreign governments. Cool!

Hey Welcome back! Friends of ours-family owned an island up north near Sudbury. It was very nice. Of course theirs was just a vacation spot and for hunting and fishing. It was about a 20 minute boat ride to the landing, then another 20 by car to the nearest town-Espanola. They ran a propane fridge and stove and propane lighting, had a huge water tower that they filled from the lake, and it gravity fed down into their cottage. Cottage was heated by wood only. the island's total size was about 2 1/2 acres. It Of course they needed a generator to operate the pump. IDK how winter went--never was their in the winter, so I imagine water would be an issue for them then, but I'm sure they cold have melted snow--there was enough of that around. The only tale I remember about winters there, were that in the spring, they had to walk the island to make sure no bears or wolves came on it over the winter--they either had to shoot or scare them off come spring. Laast I hear too, that the Toronto yuppies who had purchased islands up there wanted to bring electricity to the islands--what a feat that would be, and not cheap either.

An island? Wow, very cool! Where abouts? What a dream come true!!

From what I'm learning about island living, it is wise to collect water any way you can.

WOW!!! You all really know how to make a girl smile!! :D Thanx for the warm welcome!!

Ok, the island is still in the investigation stage, and depending on exactly where would depend on the government to report to. However, I'm looking at something about 1mile x 1mile, no smaller. I'd need room for gardening and farm animals!!

I am definitely looking at tropical.....no worries for winter heat for sure. I also want one with a water source, although I would be collecting rain water at every turn. Already got a sketch/idea for that!

As for cost....it depends on the size and location. An island off of Greece is more than one off of Australia or Africa. So we are still searching.

Ok *whew* now for catching up....where to begin?

I have been traveling back and forth across the south from LA to FL, as far as Miami and back up. The last few weeks of this month will be in NC around the Charlotte area. Then Nov will have us back in GA, which is where I am now.

We've seen and done so much! OH! I've discovered a new hobby, and I'm sure most of you already know about it.... Geocaching. Its a great game and at little to no cost!!! Just google it, (unless I can post the web site here) and check it out!

What else? hehe, just living out of a suitcase!! We try to stay and the 'country B&B's" when we can, just to get back to the 'home' feel. The last place was nice since they had chickens, guinnees (sp), ducks and goats.....I do miss the farm!!

Did I miss anything? Ack, if I did, just ask again! LOL HUGZ to everyone, I missed you all!
