I am fairly friendly with the staff at my local market. So I asked about the price volatility that I was seeing and they were pretty open about it.

They said the prices they are paying are all over the map, changing on a weekly basis from some suppliers when once they only changed monthly. They also said their back order list that comes every other night used to have three or four items on it. This past few weeks the list ranges from 20 to a record 60 items that were not available, and he said some of the not available items were standard order every week things.

He said they haven't been told yet if it is a supply chain issue or if the supplier company doesn't exist any more.

The store shelves were still full, the aisles were still full of shoppers, but the products were not in the same places (they fill up open spaces with other products) and the staff seemed harried. He said they were chronically short handed and not allowed to hire anyone.

Very interesting......DH picked up a gallon of vinegar for me at one store for $1.89, and I saw it at the closer store for almost $4.00. Same vinegar. I told him to get several bottles as soon as he can get back there. I suspect the heavier items might be an issue, as well as some of the "ingredient" type things that we who cook see disappearing from the shelves anyways.

I was always a stocker-upper with sale items, but now I find myself stocking up just to stock up.
