I will probably lurk more than post, but I feel like I should at least introduce myself. :D

I am a 23 year old mom, married, with one wonderful little boy (14 months). We have already been living a "crunchy" life by most standards, but we are ready to take it one step further. (BTW-I don't mind the label crunchy...I think it's funny). After having a homebirth, breastfeeding all this time, practicing babywearing and cloth diapering...well, we already get weird looks from our friends.

So - we just got our first group of chicks, who should be laying by summer. They are currently 2-3 weeks old and chirping like nuts in the den. We are trying our first garden this year, which I hope I don't kill...I sort of have a black thumb. We have always moved around and lived in apartments before now, but we are currently renting a house in a rural area so we have the room to take this next step. Eventually we want to get a piece of land and homestead all the way, but right now our finances are not letting us do that.

I am a student midwife and otherwise a stay-at-home mom. We will be homeschooling our little boy when the time comes for as long as my husband will let me (he has agreed that if we still live here, I can do it as long as I want...this town is a little backwards - I went to school here and hated it).

Hoping to meet some like-minded people here - and maybe some equally "crunchy" moms who are also interested in homesteading. :D

:frow Hi, and . . . :welcome

My husband and I have been trying to live fairly self sufficiently for a while now, so I am an older member of this forum, but now I'm struggling to keep up my garden and other ss projects, since I have a son a few months older than yours is. :) BTW, the trick to a green thumb, as far as I can tell, is just finding the time to nurture the plants . . . so it is sort of like having a large family (with each plant having slightly different needs). In any case, good luck with your garden this year! :) I recommend just growing the "easiest" vegetables at first.

:welcome I agree on the green thumb/black thumb thing. Just read read read about each type of plant you want to grow and then just jump in there. You'll be suprise how easily it comes with a little knowledge. Truly the hardest part is keeping weeds and grass out, and i can kill about anything ;) Crunchy...never heard that. I kinda like it too

Welcome... I'm in Canada, and have one daughter a month older than your little boy, and another little girl due in June :)

Gardening took me a few years to get the hang of, don't start too big the first year and just build on it every year. Last year we didn't have to buy veggies from the end of June until September. That was my fourth year, and the first really good year we had. I did too much at first and would get overwhelmed when the weeds took over. Last year was also my first year as a stay at home mom, it's a lot easier to garden when you don't work 60 hours a week... lol

I'm sure you'll find like minded people on here... it's a great group!

:welcome
