Hi, I'm new, I just flew over from Backyardchickens forum. A year ago, I quit my job, had a baby and started raising chickens, all in the same week. This year we also joined a CSA, and started our first real garden using the book "How to Grow More Vegetables" by John Jeavons. I also have several blackberry bushes, and grapes, just put in 12 dwarf fruit trees, blueberries and raspberries. Other random plants include a luffa, and a hops vine. I use cloth diapers, cloth pads, and prefer shopping at goodwill. My home itself is not very self sufficent, but we do what we can with our almost 2 acres. I'd LOVE to put in a woodstove, but we have a delapidated deck we need to replace..... one thing at a time, right? We have not opted to homeschool, as I don't think I have the time management to really give it justice, but our older son enjoys year round school provided by the public school system, thus far, I can't complain. My husband does work in the IT field, and that's what's paying the bills thus far. He would like to go back to school to be a nurse, but we aren't sure how to aford that on one income....
My chickens include 4 leghorn hens, one speckled sussex hen, one ss rooster, and 10 young chicks, about 10 weeks old, a mix of RIRs and Plymouth Rocks....I think 9 are hens, so we did pretty good picking out the hens.
Currently I'm also researching root cellering and canning as we have no basement, and will need more food storage space as our gardening and yields increase. Also, we buy our food via Angel Food Ministries, so we can save our cash for improvements on the homestead.
So, that's our situation in a nutshell.... I'm hoping to learn a lot here!
