We haven't discussed our plans to become as self sufficient as possible with the kids much. Most of the things we as doing right now, are things that we have always done just on a bigger scale. But the other day I was asking the kids what they wanted for Christmas. I got the typical answers from my youngest three, my middle son wants a magic kit, my daughter wants a puppy, and my 4 yo son wants a tractor. But my oldest wants automatic waterers for the chickens and some beekeeping equipment. He's 10. He might just get is wish. His little sister is not. :p

Our feed store sells these cute little John Deere tractor pedal cars...

I hate to see a little man have to suffer without a tractor! :D

Sam might get his tractor wish too. A guy that works with my DH has a 8N Ford with brand new tires that he will sell to us for $300. It has needs a new head gasket, but that isn't a huge deal. Even if the engine needs to be replaced, the tires alone are worth $300.

Those are all really good wishes! Even a puppy could grow up to be useful. ;) I'll be darned if I EVER spend $300 on a stupid IPOD so my kid can sit in a corner, twiddling her thumbs and ignoring everybody all day!

I vote for getting your 10-yr-old the beekeeping equipment. :D Aside from being such a FACINATING hobby and having all the wonderful raw local honey your family can eat, he might even make a good income from it as he gets older.
