I am getting into Juicing and had all this pulp. SOOOO I gave it to the chickens. But I would love some ideas for recipes or things people do with juicing?? I hope my carrots do good cuz you know where they are going!! Yummy!! What do you do with the extra stuff?? Maybe I should just blender the stuff....seems like a waste for the cost of fruit??

I won't get into all the science, but I do use a VitaMix instead of a juicer. We can make yummy shakes with things as tough as raw carrots as ingredients, and don't lose all the valuable fiber. My favorite is carrot, spinach, strawberries and any other berries we have in the freezer, kefir, and stevia. I add a few raw egg yolks if it will be a meal on the go.

People who say "yuk" when I tell them about it always say "yum!" when I talk them into taking a sip! Just gotta get past the color.....

ETA: Here I go, not reading thoroughly. Yep, I'd think the chickens and goats and dogs are a good place for all that pulp....I've seen recipes here and there, but remember, a lot of the flavor and goodness is gone from the pulp. I'd think you could sneak some into certain baked goods and soups and spaghetti sauces and such.

I use my juicer alot - in fact, I put 9 1/2 pints of orange juice & lemon juice in my freezer this afternoon. I feed the pulp to my goats. I'm sure my chickens would love it too, but they get other goodies. I tried giving some to The Pork Chop but he wasn't having any. After-all, he thinks he's a horse and only eats alfalfa, and when nobody is looking, his grain. Silly pig.
I once knew a woman who used the left over pulp in her cookies - I remember them being very moist and really yummy.

ETA: Thanks for the reminder Free! My Bulldog loves the pulp of apples & carrots. I'm a carrot juice fancier myself!

That's what we do. Juicing really doesn't make sense to me, while you are getting some good stuff by juicing, you are also disposeing of really good stuff.

for fruits, we make smoothies--frozen fruit pieces mixed with water, yogurt or kefir, or whey (from making yocheese or kecheese), and for veggies, cook the veggies and blend with tomatoes to make a veggie soup. I just find juicing too wasteful, although, if my citrus is getting too ripe, I will juice that.

Thanks Guys I might look into a good blender. I borrowed the juicer to see how the kids and I would like it. Or the vitathingy...I guess I could have posted this in recipes and such. Oh well. Are there a certian carrot that is better for juicing? And tomato that you prefeer?

Thanks,
Robin

Hmmmm.... I thought the blender was for liver and onions with milk? Thats what my mom taught me, when you didn't eat what was on your plate in a reasonable amount of time. She'd grab it put it in the blender with your glass of milk.

She only had to do it twice, the second was with some kind of crock pot lamb... :tongue :sick

Move along folks, nothing to see here.. No hi jacking the thread...... :hide

Well I had a juicer a while back and loved it but it was broke and they wouldn't send me the replacement piece for over 6 week and I said no way and sent it back, tried one from walmart and the pulp collector was broke. So I gave up on juicers. Then we went to a "Less Than Perfect" store and found a Jack LaLanne power juice yesterday brand new for $38 :celebrate:D (the box was not in perfect condition but I throw the box away anyhow!!!) Used it today and DD11 has been bugging me forever to get another juicer, she LOVES the fresh juice and she is a big juice drinker. So for $38 I said ok I will try again and so far so good. Now DD11 wants to go to Walmart and get more fruits and veggies to make more juice because we just juiced the last 1/2 bag of apples.

As for the PULP. There are many recipes for using the pulp in muffins, apple sauce, cookies, cakes, breads, veggie soup, smoothies, frozen and blended for cold summer treats, frozen fruit pops, put in jello, veggie pulp over salads, pasta sauce, salsa, in lasagna, ect. and when all else fails give it to the chicken for added treats. They LOVE it. So for me there really is no waste.
:thumbsup

When I saw the title of this thread I was intrigued...just why would you want to juice a chicken?

Well, I guess modernpioneer has the answer to that! :gig :sick
