DH brought home 2 large plastic barrels. When we checked them over, we couldn't find much written in English. I wondered if they may be 'food grade' since there is a picture of a glass & fork on the side. When I checked online for any info about them...the website isn't in English either. The most I can find out is it's Greek.

Does anyone know more about this?

according to Europa food safety website information "If an article is intended for food contact it shall be labelled for food contact or bear the symbol with a glass and fork." it's a symbol universally recognized in Europe. my guess would be that it's safe, but i'd probably want to know what was in it originally.

Thanks Bibliophile Birds. I don't know for sure what was stored in them before, but they didn't smell 'bad' like chemicals or other questionables, more like 'enclosed' plastic.

I'm thinking a good cleaning will be just the ticket, and if nothing else to store rain water for emergency drinking water for us & or critters (after a good boiling) or maybe just for watering the garden.

Any good ideas for a cleaning solution?

i can't be sure but they Sound like the oversized drums that greek olives are shipped in. If so they had the olives and a fairly heavy salt brine. of course some come packed in oil but I would think that smell would be known to you. Hundreds were sold in my county a year ago during a drought period, either as rain barrels or to be filled with water from the taps on the days that you were allowed to draw water for lawn/garden use to hoid it for days that you were not allowed to use water out side your home. At that time they were recommending a good rinse with plain water before 1st use. Many 'artists' were painting 'garden designs' and they even had a beauty contest for best paint job.
