Our daily routine is getting a little stale since were stuck indoors. So I was thinking of some new games for the kids to play. And I got to thinking about games I played when I was little. What were some of your favorite games? Was it something you made up or a classic like Tag or hide and seek? Cabin fevers got us and we're stuck in a rut :)

Build a giant fort and eat in it and "camp" in it over night with flashlights and scary stories :D

That was always a big fave. Do it still!!!

Uhm.... we played penny poker a lot.

OUTSIDE we played Samurai Badminton, obstacle course olympics, and crazy games like that.

INSIDE was harder. No running rules. We surfed down the stairs a lot. We did versions of karaoke. Dressed up and had concerts.

Most of our games I probably shouldn't mention though. They were inappropriate. :gig

Oh!! We built card cities, hid legos in them, and had GI Joe bomb the villages!!! And then we'd take out GI Joe and execute him. That was fun :D

Shouldn't mention what GI Joe did to Barbie or the horses >.>

We would dress up and enact entire movies. Notably the Princess Bride. Venetian blind wands make good swords.

I also used to decide to cook and make up a menu and make my sister choose a meal and then I would cook it for her and serve it nice and demand money.

Sometimes we would rearrange all the furniture in the house.

Samurai Badminton????? I would have loved that!!!
We played Fox and the Geese when we had snow on the ground. Someone would stamp out a huge circle with their feet then make an "x" through it. One person was the fox, all other players were geese. The fox was only allowed to be on the "x". The geese could be anywhere on the circle or the "x". The fox had to try to catch the geese as the moved around. We would play for hours until we were numb from the cold! It was really cool if we could get someone's mom or dad to be the fox.
Inside we played a lot of board games and cards.

Can't think of anything other than board games, Chess, puzzles, etc. But we have a few travel games that might work...

Stories: One person starts a sentence, and says a few words, and stops. The next person picks up where they left off, and says a few more words, and you go around the circle, with each person adding to the story. You don't have to finish the sentence, or you can say a fair amount. Can get pretty funny.

Nursery Rhymes: Seriously... Take turns reciting nursery rhymes, and see who wears out first. Can do this with folk or silly songs, or other things too.

Acronyms: We do this driving down the highway, from the letters on trucks or license plates, but you can also make up a bunch of three letter initial sets and put them on slips to draw out at random. You take the sets of initials and think up silly things that they stand for - like CNC: Chickens Need Candy. It is a great vocabulary builder, as well as pretty funny. We always run with one as long as the kids are still coming up with new stuff, move on to a new one when they have milked the first one good!

Come to think of it, our family plays Charades sometimes too, on lazy days at home, and the kids always love that.

You can also throw a "homemade party" any time. The rules are that everything has to be made from ingredients and materials on hand. No matter how poor we are, we can usually come up with a special menu, even if it is just homemade tortillas crispy fried and made into nachos, homemade donuts, or something else fun.

we use to play gladiator in the snow. :)

I always let my daughter take my army gear and play outside. At this time of yr the snow camo rocks. We do hide and seek. She's getting really good. After dark we use night vision to play.

We also do treasure hunt. I come up with a list of items outside and have her complete the list. Yes there is rewards but always not matter what hot coco. :)

We loved hide and seek but it is difficult and limited indoors....so we would each choose a small toy to hide and play it that way indoors.

I forget what age your kids are, maybe they are too old, but mine love scavenger hunts (either of the "find all the random objects on this list" variety, or the kind, not really a scavenger hunt but I forget the name, where you hide notes and each note gives a clue to where to find the next note and so on until you find a 'prize' at the end)

Anything involving cardboard boxes, like from the grocery store.

Making books about <whatever>, by stapling folded paper together, it used to be the kids would just dictate and I would write down their words and sketch little (bad :p) illustrations but now they can do some of that themselves when they want; or books made using pics cut out from magazines or seed catalogs or whatever.

Paper mache masks or pinatas (based on a balloon which you eventually pop), fancifully decorated.

Sorting boxes of misc hardware (I find this very useful to have the kids do <g> although they usually need MAJOR handwashing afterwards)

Also they like training the dog :p

we love to sing songs out loud about whatever we can think of. it might be about buggers or poop or who cares. the one time i can remember is my my son (5 at the time) and my mom were singing in the car and when i hit the line about the rats with weggies he laughed until he cried. my son is very visual. i can make him laugh at the drop of a dime (hes 10 now). one person starts with a couple of words and the next person takes it from there

play i spy

To go along w/the writing notes idea, have the notes in Morse Code. Give the kids a 3x5 card w/what each symbol means, then turn them loose.

My 4 kids get bored on road trips, so I thought of this , and it worked pretty good. Some one starts by saying a word, for instance respect, then everyone tries to think of a song and sing part of it with that word in it. So it would have probely been R E S P E C T, find out what it means to me. Then who ever got the first guess, gets to give the next word. This works very well with different generations of people, because of the variety of music available.
