Now I know that a lot of us produce much of our own food and in general we tend to do a lot of from scratch cooking (had a child visiting yesterday, DD mentioned to her the cake & frosting we made from scratch she asked....what's scratch? :th )

Here is what is on the Kroger recall site. I just found it fascinating!

Don't you feel superior when you read those lists?

And, whoa, the length of those lists!!!! :th

And what about this one: "HOMEGROWN CANTALOUPE (Sold July 22-July 27)
Affected in Jay C stores.

Reason: The product may be contaminated with Salmonella and, if eaten, could result in severe illness to those individuals with a weakened immune system." Yikes! :ep

What happened to " that which doesn't kill me, makes me stronger" (Nietzsche)? This doesn't apply to food recalls? :gig

Migrant workers in the fields all day and no restrooms..... That is how you get ill from cantaloupe :sick

I have always been taught to wash melons before cutting into them.

Just one more reason to grow your own!!

When I got married, my MIL was convinced that I was going to kill her son by canning our own food instead of buying the "good" store-bought stuff.

and run off from cow factories. i read that that is actually the biggest cause of it. not migrants pooping in fields lol. those don't HELP i'm sure... but they aren't the main factor. although i'm sure the cow factories want you to think that, instead of realizing they let the cows stand in filth and then wash it into the fields, neh?
Well around here we don't have many CAFOS....if any, but we have tons of migrant workers. And I do not mean to imply that it is their fault, they do back breaking labor for very low pay with no appropriate facilities for sanitation!

To be honest I don't even know how or why salmonella is spread, (at some point I knew, in school but for the life of me, I am drawing a blank) but I know that whenever you put animals OR people in deplorable conditions the outcome is frequently not good.
