Hi, I'm a Fine Art student and have no idea about woodwork, so I would be eternaly grateful for any help.
I am trying to ge hold of the material i need for a very large woodcut.
I need four large wood boards/panels 190 x 190 centimeters, and about 2 cantimeters thick, of cherry or some other wood suitable for carving.
Does anybody know where I can find boards that large, and if not, how can I join the smaller ones so they would look as one piece?
And what would be the price of a boad like that.
Please help me out with this...I really don't know who should I contact for this...

Cheers,

Mandy

Wow! That is better than 6 feet by 6 feet and slightly more than 3/4 inches thick. Wood is normally sold by the board foot -- a piece 12" x 12". Cherry can be up to around $5 bf which would be about $180 for the amount of wood you have there. However, hardwood rarely comes in greater than 10 to 12 inches wide so this would be a massive glue up project. Then you would need the equipment to plane that large panel flat. I think only a custom lumberyard would tackle that job and the cost of the labor would be substantial. Your best bet would be to find a custom lumber and millwork business in your area and talk with them. Transporting a large and very heavy slab of wood would also be an issue. Lotsa luck with that project.

Wood for carving

As the previous poster indicated you want several very large pieces of wood. They would have to be glued together from narrow boards to make your demension.

The big thing for you would be the cost of the wood and the shipping to get it to you as well as the surfacing, glue up and shop time. The link below would be able to do it for you, but I am not sure of the cost, but we could find out if you want.

Is there any reason that you picked cherry for your wood?

Your best bet is to find a custom cabinet shop near where your school is located and see if they will make your boards for you. In any event you most likely will want to be around or see the boards that are glued together because they will all be somewhat different.
