Okay, my lab Tonka keeps geting yeast infections in his right ear. His is miserable and so am I. I don't want to take him to the vet cause he pretty much already told me that he can't fix it. Dumb vet.

What can I do to make this go away? I have heard that yogurt will help and that I need to take them off of a food with any grain in it cause that will convert to sugar which feeds the yeast.

Help.

If you are 100% SURE it is yeast, then go get some Monistat and put it in his ear. For real!

Then look at what you are feeding him. Does it contain grains? Corn? For some dogs, going to grain-free food does wonders for chronic ear infections.

Good luck! :)

I'd try grapefruit seed extract liquid, diluted a little and swabbed on. There's just about nothing it won't kill, but it's especially good for fungal infections. But make sure it's seed extract, not grapefruit oil. Big, big difference. Amazon has it and a bottle will last forever because it is used by the drop.
I am using it on bumblefoot in the chickens with great results.

Oil of oregano would be good too, but used internally.

Yup.....your feed can be the cause of the ear troubles. What do you feed him?

We feed Taste of The Wild. They have 3 flavors and we rotate flavors so they don't get bored. We also add green beans, yogurt, etc. to their meal to help fill them up.

Try vinegar and water. I use about a 50-50 solution. About means a little less vinegar and a tad more water. Warm water.
I personally like really warm water but the dog may only want body temp warm.

I have yeast infection in my left ear. Happened years ago when I worked a switch board. I had constant problems, especially when I got a cold or sinus problem. A few years ago, I went to a different Dr. He told me to use vinegar and water. Now at the first sign of sinus or cold I use the solution immediately. Works like a charm. Now instead of having to go to the Dr two or three times a year and buy expensive creams and prescriptions I have very few problems. Maybe once every year or so. You can also just use the solution as maintenance. I would not use more than 1 time a month for maintenance.

Once you have yeast in your system it never goes away. It just lies dormant until something, illness, stress, body ph out of balance sets it free. Its a lot like athletes foot.

Don't do this for a dog. While the vinegar/water solution IS a good ear cleaner, a dog's ear canal take a 90 degree turn. It's impossible to get all the liquid out and the moist environment can make whatever is growing in there worse.

That's also why you can clean a dog's ear with Q-tips and not worry about damaging the ear drum. You can't reach the ear drum with a straight Q-tip.

You have heard correctly. Get some taste of the wild (or other grain-free dog food) ASAP.

Yep, try a grain free dog food. Also feed some yogurt (plain yogurt) with his feed, and give a fish oil supplement.

My Shih-tzu has had full body yeast issues since his first year of life. Hundreds were spent before I got him on allergy tests, shots, etc. I've spent more on food, shampoos, creams, etc. Our groomer (a Shih-tzu breeder) says you can control it but not eliminate it. She says to use a particular shampoo and bath him every other day, but who has that kind of time?

His skin is inflamed and he scratches, chews, flakes, stinks, etc. His ears have some issues and his eyes are often clouded by film. He is only 4, but I'd like to find a vet willing to put him down without more attempts to treat him. But my mom feels sorry for the dog and so he continues in his present state.

Taste of the Wild and 4 Heath foods do okay for him.

I know a lady who has excellent results with severe allergy dogs. She bathes her allergy dogs (no shampoo) after every time they go outside to rinse of environmental allergens.

She also uses salmon oil and vitamin E as an anti-inflammatory. Feeds raw diet.
