can anyone help me with the proper order in a standard networking cable. I am connecting it to a second computer. I have gotten some contradicting answers on the net. I am using standard Cat 5 cable.

If you are using a hub all you need for a simple network is a "straight-through cable" . If on the other hand you are trying to connect two 10BaseT or 100BaseT network cards, Notebook and desktop pc for example, your will need a Ethernet Cross Over cable again with RJ45 ends,

orange-white, orange, green-white, blue, blue-white, green, brown-white, brown.

That's the national standard. :)

For a straight-through (which will connect through a hub, as traveller said), do both ends the same (the above).

For a cross-over (to connect two computers directly), do as follows:

Cat 5 cable is good, you want it as short as posible so you get no signal loss. Best Buy has a good selection and there geek department can guide ya through it. Do you have a router or straight from modem connection? Because if its from modem then its easier to run cable for the modem than the cat 5. There is a new kind of cat cable out its 'cat 6' cable and backwardly compatable with cat 5.
