Our new rolling composter!!

Our first one. Lots of lessons learned but it works well. Turned out better than we thought it might.

And please disregard the messy porch in the back. We're still unpacking. Ask me that in 20 years and that'll still probably be my answer. :)

We cut the top off and are going to flip it over so it fits snuggly and then using bungee cords to keep it down for spinning. Gonna see how this one works and then maybe try other designs if need be.

Right now its in the "airing out" phase (stupid vinegar. hope it comes out)!! And with all of the wind we've been having that shouldn't take long!

As for the unpacking excuse we have lived here almost 2 years now and I still have my bedroom and spare bedroom full of crap that "needs unpacked" :gig

Kala, thanks so much or posting that pix, it is very cool

The construction doesn't seem to be hard to do and we have all the needed supplies on hand so I think I will be sweet talking my DH in to a new project this weekend.

We now have a "store" bought one and we have to toss the materials with the pitch fork, which is not easy when it is full.

I think flipping it will be much easier

Thanks again

Looks good to me. I especially like the idea of removing the top by cutting around the side and the flipping the top piece over to use as a removable lid. Good thinking. And don't forget to moisten the compost once in a while.

Yea, it actually wasen't too hard at all. We just did alot of youtube searches!! We used (2) 2x4, (1) 2x6, a metal rod to actually bear the load and then a pvc pipe to do the moving (plus now its plastic barrel to pvc, thought maybe that would help it last longer as opposed to the metal grinding on the plastic barrel??) Let me know if you want any more pictures for reference or anything.

We also figured it would be easier to just flip it. Plus when its ready to go be can just bring the wheelbarrow underneath while another person holds it horizontal so we can get it all out. The only pain is going to be the bar in the middle but it should be fine.

Just be sure to put some small holes in it so it can 'breathe'! Lol.

I like it :thumbsup and now I want one!!!

My sad little compost bin fell apart...it was crudely fashioned from wooden fence slats and chicken wire. This design would be so easy to keep stirred up and looks easy to dump out too.

Thanks for sharing!

Is there a handle or something for flipping? I'm imagining 75+ pounds of compost and my weak self not able to budge it.

nope. nothing yet. so far so good, as long as you can get the momentum started it starts turning pretty well. plus it stirs everything up well enough that we don't have to flip it too much each time. but its not all that full yet either.

we did see some on youtube that were horizontally positioned that did have a crank system so those might be easier to turn. but they require a little more time and moving parts and we wanted to keep our first one simple and see if it worked ok. so those ones might be worth checking out for easier turning. :)
