I am thinking I want to make my own apple cider vinegar,,and I go to lots of auctions,at these auctions I see lots of old redwing crocks,I saw a 30 gallon today in really good shape,no cracks but it was pitting and a little flaky in the bottom,,so the question is are these safe to use this way?..it only went for around $85 so thats not bad,but I didnt want to buy it not knowing.

Do you think the flakes were the glaze coming off? I'd be a little wary of using it for making vinegar. My grandma used to make pickles in an old crock like that. Maybe that's what salt and vinegar do to the glaze over time.

I don't know "redwing" crocks, locally we have old Medalta Potteries crocks and they have a very thick durable glaze. Medalta is now a museum but they made tons of crocks back when they were in business. Their crocks tend to be pretty pricey if they are in good condition, like over $100.

Usually when glaze on pottery breaks down it cracks or "crazes" (gets all reticulated with little cracks running everywhere) as opposed to flaking, but as I say I don't know your brand name. Perhaps the flakes are the remains of whatever was last in the crock, or the result of hard water?

redwings where made in redwing MN,,so are in high demand around here,,to me the chipping almost looked like someone beat on the bottom with a spoon or something..I will pass on them and get a glass 2 gallon jug instead,,
