Olympia Snow decided to break away from the crowd and voted to help her constituents. It takes guts to break ranks with your party. Sometimes a person has to do what's right though. I'm sure there will be a lobster fisherman that thanks her when he has to have his finger sewn back on. Or a clown living in the sewer that can't afford insurance. Those people will thank her as will many others. A right thinking Republican. We need more of them.

Write your Senator and tell them to quit being party hacks and vote for what their constituents want like Olympia Snow did.

I wonder what the fall out is for doing something like that. Good for her! As she said, in basically these words, "The status quo only gets us in a worse and worse situation. We have to do SOMEthing."

The clown eats her.

I wish more people from both sides were more like her.

It all looks so professional in front of the media, but I wonder if in the back halls of Congress someone is saying to her, "Way to go, dipwad!" :D

Yes, both sides could use a little more spirit of working across the aisle. It's great to hold onto your ideals, except nothing gets done in politics if people are not willing to compromise. I think the trick would be knowing which things you CANNOT compromise on and those things you would be willing to move a little on.

She was one of eight senators to not miss any votes.

______
goes to show ONLY 8 decided to vote on everything...hmmm..aside from personal tragedy, isn't this a low number. Shouldn't every single one of them "do their job" and vote.

Ugh

I love her first name. I think of that actress in Steel Magnolias. Way off topic, but hey...lol

Great example, but outnumbered. At least she tries from her heart on the real problems.

If it gets too dicey for her she can quit her party and join the Dems. I know the GOP has been making "veiled" threats if she votes for the bill. :/

Can you get kicked out of your own party? I know some people flip-flop back and forth between parties voluntarily...

Well what usually happens is the party supports another candidate to run against you in a primary. Then if you don't get voted out in the primary, your party is usually split to the point where the other party wins the seat. In Snows case she is a legend and very well liked in her state. Some people will tell you otherwise, but that is because they are hard right conservatives and don't like her. She is kind of like McCain. She thinks a little clearer though. One thing the RNC can do though is withdraw funding from her campaign. A lot of people donate straight to the DNC or RNC and they decide where to spend the money for political commercials. Unfortunately most Americans vote based on those annoying commercials that are almost always based on lies. From both sides, although the RNC really has it down a lot better. Karl Rove was a true genius at misleading the public. Goebels had nothing on him. I'm not calling Rove a Nazi so anyone that wants to jump on that bandwagon please spare me.

So yes they can have some effect on her. I think they can also exclude her from committees. So defying them and doing the right thing was risky on her part. Maybe she'll join the other side in keeping the Empire in exile.

Ahh... I see. They could weaken her to the point of political death. Of course, she is well known and liked so maybe she will survive anyway. It seems that political memories are short, but maybe that is simply from the voter's point of view.

I'm sure she'll campaign on the fact that she is working to help the people. As of Sept 2009 12.3% of Maines population was uninsured. That's the 2nd highest in the Northeast region. Those people will remember her efforts. I'm sure she'll get elected.
