Paint or tinted lacquer

So I'm trying to design a distressed furniture line and have been told about two different ways to finish the furniture. Either primer, paint, then lacquer... or going with sealer, tinted lacquer, then lacquer. I'm not quite sure which one to go with. both are comparable in pricing. So which way is more efficient for doing a solid color piece of furniture?

You can use any alcohol based dye, then seal and apply to the final polyurethane varnish.

Or the newest finish is soft forming, where some automotive paints used, but this procedure I will just ask.
