Plywood vs solid walnut

I am new to woodworking, so have basic questions. My first project was a large armoire. Since it was 24 inches deep, the plan called for the sides to be 3/4 plywood (as were the top and floor). Raised panel doors and casing were all made from 3/4 boards.

All turned out well, so I am making another, this time with home-cut, air-dried walnut. My boards are about 1 foot wide and finished to 3/4 inch thick. Here is my question: Since walnut plywood is so expensive, can I make the sides out of solid wood? I know about wood expansion & contraction, so could I glue up 20-inch by 60-inch boards and let them expand in grooves like a door panel, or would I be asking for grief? If I were to do it this way, is 3/4 inch too thick?

For the back I will use purchased 1/4 inch birch plywood.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Solid wood will always move more then plywood, If you run the grain in your boards in opposite directions when you glue them, you will significantly decrease the chances of things warping on you.

Good tip woadwunner. You do have to be careful when using real wood versus plywood. Real wood looks nicer and will last longer, but it will warp and move out of shape.
