We don't eat popcorn very often; its not one of DH's childhood tastes (he doesn't dislike it, just doesn't think much about it), and I just don't think of it just for me. But, the other day I had a hankering for some, but realized that what I had had been on the pantry shelf for quite a few years, and not vacuum packed. I held off on my popcorn binge till I had bought some new, and also researched ways to make old popcorn *pop*. I found that by adding a couple of tablespoons of water to the jar, and shaking it every so often for a few days, it will re-hydrate the corn so that it will recover its *pop*. I tried this, and the corn soaked up the water within the day, but the *pop* was still rather dismal. So maybe it needed a bit more water?
My question then, is what to do with this old popcorn (now that I have new, eager to pop, corn). I would grind it for cornbread, except the one thing the instructions for my grain mill explicitly warns against is grinding popcorn, as it is too hard. Maybe I could break it up a bit in the blender, and feed it to the chickens? I could experiment with adding some more water (another couple of tablespoons) to see if that helps with its *pop*, but it seems sort of silly (seeing as we really don't eat much popcorn) to work hard at getting the old corn to pop while I have a new batch just waiting for a hot pan.
Any ideas for me? I have about 3 cups of the stuff.
