I am thinking of turning an outbuilding on our property into a larger shop for me to piddle around in. The only trouble is that it does not have electricity. What would be the most cost efficient way of getting electricity out there? I guess I shouldn't attempt it myself. How high a voltage must I plan for?

I know this is long overdue but I thought I'd give it a shot. What is the distance from your house to this out-building?
I would normally run 240 volts to a sub-panel a 30 amp minimum capacity.
You would need to drive two 8 ft ground rods, six feet between them and run a loop of #6 stranded bare copper to the panelbox.
You would also need to purchase an auxillary grounding bar for use inside the 30 amp sub-panel. Why? I'll explain later.
