I know someones up and got to see this.

I think I gave myself food poisoning, I've been throwing up for over an hour and starting to do that horrible dry heave thing you do when there's nothing left. I drank some water but hubby wants to take me to emergency.

I don't know when I go? I haven't been sick in a long time, and the last time I was throwing up was several NYE's ago when I had alcohol poisoning.

So when do I go?

I have never gone in for food poisoning.
But I would advise sucking on ice cubes, rather then drinking water.

Go if you get too dehydrated. Cannot keep liquid down and ER might be nice just for the IV even if you don't need anything else.

No clue how to tell that point but I know I've passed it and I should have gone. It took me MUCH longer to recover because I didn't go to ER.

Agree on the dehydrated part. You'll know you need to go because you don't feel like getting up far enough to barf in the toilet. If it gets that bad, just go to the ER.

Unless you think it's botulism - in which case, get to an ER now.

Only thing to add is to drink water. Dry heaves are painful (for me at least). When I was pregnant and knew I was going to "puke" (dry heaves) in the morning, I would drive a big glass of water so my body had something to puke up. It helped with the pain!

Is there a clinic nurse line you can call? Or health insurance companies will have a nurse line.

I'm sorry, that really sucks :(

It neednt necessarily be food poisoning; a bug from dirt or poo, or a virus, can also produce that sort of effect.

It happens to me every five or ten years, a few hours of near-constant barfing and then feeling like death warmed over for the rest of the day and then fine the next day.

Hopefully that's all you've got.

Obviously you should follow your own instincts, but personally I have never gone to the hospital or doctor for it (I would if I got dehydrated though, or had other alarming symptoms) and I try to take frequent tiny single sips of water after the first coupla hours, and follow my "gut instincts" so to speak as to what and when to resume eating.

Hoping you're feeling better this morning, good luck,

Pat

Oh, I hope you feel better. :(

I would be afraid to answer that question. I DON'T go, but I wouldn't want to tell anyone else not to. There are electrolyte tabs you can take, and if it were food poisoning you can try activated charcoal, but unless you already have them it won't help.

It's been years since I had food poisoning. I literally made a pallet near the toilet because I couldn't move well, and was sick like that for 3 days. There was much blood involved. I couldn't get to the doctor, and I DID recover, but it was slow and my body won't let me eat fish much anymore.

If you do have access ... I dunno, if it doesn't settle after a few hours or you become worried about yourself? I think it's best judged by the person who is feeling it. You know your body. And since you asked "when do I go?" I'm guessing that you can go. That's good.

And I hope you are already feeling better and resting now.
:hugs

Thanks guys. I did end up going, I was mentally and emotionally in pain from my day yesterday (dog attacked chicken, had a car run into my body at work) that I was sobbing and barfing, dry heaving and farting, peeing and puking all at once. By the time hubby got me to the ER, I rolled out of my truck and crawled in there (literally) puking dark green bile in my dogs dish :/ They said it was stomach bug, not food poisoning. Two nurses kept coming and asking me uqestions, eluding to I was pregnant. I'm not going into my sex life, but that's impossible at this point and it pissed me off. They gave me kliforan or whatever to stop nausea, I threw up a little after that and started shaking so they gave me a second. I got two good hours of sleep before they sent me home. In a 4 hour span I took 3 more, at 6am threw up all that + liquids and haven't thrown up since. Got a little liquid down, took a bath and my mommys making me sourdough w/ honey.

Thanks again :)

I'm glad you're feeling better, MsPony, that sounded really awful. :/

I don't really have anything else to add, except I was surprised to see how many folks are on the forum in the middle of the night - good to know if I get insomnia!
