We have one of those old, treadle sewing machines and the wood on the top has warped.

What is the best way to restore it?

Will fixing it alter its value?

When the wood that has been flat for many years warps, you have to find the reason why. Near an area of high humidity, heat, etc. Remove that cause and many times the wood will return to near normal. Wood with a permanent warp is very difficult to repair and, unless the machine is really valuable, a new top may be the only way to fix it. Repairs on antiques, unless done by a pro in antique restoration, almost always lowers the value.

It might be good to have the piece appraised before we do anything to it. If it isn't that valuable, as is, then refinishing may not make any difference.

Wouldn't it be great if you found out it was worth a ton of money?

About how much would the worth be affected if it was refinished?

I'm not sure that I've ever encountered a warped top like that which was able to be fixed. I've heard of replacement restoration, but I have yet to see something "de-warped" as it were. Mind you, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. but it's beyond my knowledge and limited expertise.

My mother picked up a few old furniture pieces and the veneers were warped, but the wood under the veneer was in pretty good shape.

Would restoring these also be a mistake, or does the presence of a veneer lower the likelihood a piece would appraise well?
