Does anyone out there have any idea how I can rout an inside cove profile in an arch and come to a tight point at the top of the arch. The arches vary from 5" to 15" wide, side to side. I have a project which requires cutting several of these arches, which copy arch windows in medieval churches. I have seen this woodwork in churches, which I am sure were not cut with CNC's nor were they cut by hand, but have been cut by machine. Iam looking to cut 3/4" inside coves which I assume will give me 3/4" radius at the top of the arch point. Is the only way to bring it to a sharp point by carving?

Your idea sounds lovely!

I have a feeling, though, that your "point" would require the use of hand tools, or a jig saw to get it as clean as what is found in old churches.

Good luck!

This sounds incredibly lovely. I can't give you pointers, but I wish you all the encouragement in the world. There are few things as perfect as medieval architecture, if there is any to be found these days. I'm glad to know that there are those interested in recreating such beauty. Good luck.

Having made a batch of tracery work some years ago I can confirm that only a chisel/gouge will give the required result
