We had 2 skunks visit today. We have a rabbit hutch on our covered front porch. I think the skunks were after the rabbit. It smells like one sprayed the porch then the other went over and sprayed our dogs in the back yard. On top of that our garage smells like it took a direct hit. The dogs will be sleeping outside for a while. If they can't learn to stay away from skunks then they can sleep outside. This is 2nd time for them. My question is if anyone knows how to get the skunk smell off my porch. I have company coming for Turkey Day and it is coming into the house every time the door is opened. Any suggestions?

These tactics WILL NOT work very well:

Bath in tomato juice
Spray with lemon or orange citrus
Masking agents like perfume or Fabreze
How do you eliminate the odor once you have been sprayed by a skunk? Well first of all, you or your dog should have known the warning signs ahead of time. A skunk will give many clear signals before it sprays. If threatened, it will stamp its front feet, arch its back, and shuffle away. If you don't leave right away, it will turn its posterior toward you, raise the tail, and release the smelly musk, a sulfur-alcohol compound, from special glands near the anus. This spray not only stinks, but burns and can cause temporary blindness if it is sprayed directly into the eyes. Since you didn't take heed and got sprayed, here is how to get rid of the smell:
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

If you can't go to all of the trouble of buying hydrogen peroxide at your local drug store, then a 2% vinegar solution will help a bit. But please, don't bother with the old tomato juice tactic unless you want to smell like skunk + tomato.

So that will work on my house. The dogs will get rid of it the way mother nature intended. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have a problem. I do care about the house. The intensity of the smell causes a headache.

I had a golden retriever that got skunked once. I tried tomato juice, lemon juice, massengill  and finally it was Dawn dish detergent that worked the best.
I put vicks vapor rub under my nose to sleep- I think I saw that hint on the XFiles, lol.

Just like cops use at autopsies huh? Fortunately it's real mild in the bedrooms. We have been burning a lot of incense in the living room.

that recipe really works. my dog is like a skunk magnet. she has been sprayed probably 10 times. it's always when someone other than myself lets her out unsupervised and she wanders off into the woods. she's missing one eye and too old to leave outside over night, so i had to find something. the smell won't be completely gone with a single wash, but it certainly makes it bearable.

one thing to note: this recipe works like a light bleaching agent. my dog is white but often looks off-white because she likes to get in the dirt. after a good bath with this stuff, she is usually sparkly white... until she goes outside again! if your deck has a dark stain on it, be careful to rinse the area well after you clean it with the solution.

Embrace the skunky smell. Tell the visitors that nature has visited your porch!
Take the visitors and rope off a path to the "back" door to avoid the smell of nature!!!!

just kidding of course :p

skunks have killed a few of my chickens. rough critters!

no recipe for getting rid of the smell but hope of of the others might help you!!
