I'm looking at a property that is classified as silty clay loam, class 2w. Does anyone have experience with this type of soil or this class of soil? Are special implements needed? What type of plowing is most appropriate?
Could be a river bottom. The house is on higher ground. I'm just thinking about the prospect of gardening. Class 2 soil is good for crops, but I wonder what I'll have to do to keep it dry. We're looking at several properties and this is the winner so far. Sadly, I may have to clear several mature trees on the SE side before I can have a reasonably large garden.so lucky said:Just a guess, based on the classification, but you probably would want to try to control soil depletion from flooding. Sounds like it may be river bottom? River bottom land is some of the most fertile around here, from the Mississippi and from the Missouri rivers. However, it does flood every few years. Not something you would want to build a house on--probably wouldn't be allowed to, anyway. Could you talk to some of the farmers in the area? Or check with the extension office for that county?
