We are working on American Flags for the family. We have to speckle black paint over the top of the flag to make it look "Antiqued" when finished. We have been using a small paint brush to do this. It's messy and often times we get a big glop of paint. Anything else we can use to finish this project?

We speckle or spackle (as my kids call it) and we use old toothbrushes. You dip the brush in the paint and then shake it off a bit. You can then flick the brush and the paint speckles the project you are working on. Your finger gets all paint but it goes on the project nicely.

I've used Wall paper paste brushes for this. Pour some paint in a pan, juse enough to cover the bottom of the pan. Dip the brush and then tap it on the edge of the pan to remove any globs. Hold the brush over the item to be speckled and then tap the handle of the brush with a block of wood to dislodge the paint. The harder you tap the more paint comes off. Takes a bit to find out the right combination but very effective and because the brush is large you can do a large area quickly.

Awesome ideas both and thanks! I think for smaller projects we will use the toothbrush. I do like the idea of the wallpaper brush too. That would work wonderful for bigger projects.

I don't know how it would work on a flag, but there are some excellent aging markers and dyes at scrapbook stores. Shoe polish might work, too. Then go crazy with the brushes.

What is an aging marker? It sounds interesting. Where or what would you use it on? I don't think you speckle things to make them old looking - you apply stain to do that. Of course sanding also helps "antique" things.
