We recently got an old china cabinet that was in my husband's grandmother's old apartment. My brother-in-law had tried staining it years and years ago, but didn't sand it before he stained it, so it turned out really bad. Does anyone have any tips for re-staining it?

You will have to strip the cabinet before you restain it. Because the dark paint would have stained the wood, you would have to sand it until you see the natural wood. I hope this helps.

I had an old piece of furniture one time that had a terrible staining job. All I did was sand it over (not to the bare wood) and re-applied a stain that was close in color. It turned out pretty decent. There is also a stain remover you can buy if you want to take it down closer to the bare wood.
