I have been stocking up on some things for emergency preparedness,

and have also been learning how to use cheap and old fashioned ingredients to do most of my house hold chores

so I basically can clean any thing with baking soda and vinegar

my question is this,
I can use those two things above so well,

what do you think, is there a reason I should stock up on amonia or bleach even though I don't use them in my daily routines?

is there something that they can do that I am not aware of, that merits making some space for them on the shelf for that "just in case" scenerio?

thanks!

I am not a fan of bleach, but it can be used to purify water, should the need arise. I believe it is one tablespoon of bleach added to one gallon of water, then let sit for about an hour.

:ep Not for drinking purposes, right?
Thats a whole lot of bleach. Considering that if you are using bleach in water for dipping dishes, and it is literally drops of bleach per several gallons of water.....

I think one is better off keeping a bottle of lugol's iodine around for purifying water in an emergency.
Everyone can benefit from consuming more iodine, so there is no need to worry about its use.

I also keep a 2 ounce bottle of tea tree oil around. Good for potenial infections, and a few drops in a full spray bottle of water, can be used to disinfect when needed.

You know....I started with the whole bleach thing...stocking up and all....then I realised something. I cant STAND the smell of bleach!! :/ So, I now am going a smarter for me...rout. Rubbing alcohol and peroxide. Smaller bottles....and it does the same for disinfecting. A little peroxide in your whites...sure brightens them up. ( think Oxy clean) You can use it on cuts...but you dont dare use bleach on an open wound. Disinfect countertops...better than bleach...and smells alot better!

For bleach, I fouond this information on how much to use. It does work great if needed. Hope this helps.

Ratio of Clorox Bleach to Water for Purification

2 drops of Regular Clorox Bleach per quart of water
8 drops of Regular Clorox Bleach per gallon of water
1/2 teaspoon Regular Clorox Bleach per five gallons of water
If water is cloudy, double the recommended dosages of Clorox Bleach.

Only use Regular Clorox Bleach (not Fresh Scent or Lemon Fresh). To insure that Clorox Bleach is at its full strength, rotate or replace your storage bottle minimally every three months.

Clorox Bleach Sanitizing Solution

To sanitize containers and utensils, mix 1 tablespoon Regular Clorox Bleach with one gallon of water. Always wash and rinse items first, then let each item soak in Clorox Bleach Sanitizing Solution for 2 minutes. Drain and air dry.

Pool chlorine tablets are way more shelf stable. I bought 4 bottles at the end of season clearance last year just for emergency water purification & cleaning.

I thought I read somewhere that clorox eventually looses its potency... and that there is another chemical that is better to store but I don't remember what it is....

anybody?

We used clorox when traveling in mexico to purify our camper water tank... it takes very very little... then we used a carbon filter to take it out at the tap.

Not exactly. Depending on the proportion of bleach to ammonia, you can get chlorine gas, nitrogen thrichloride, or hydrazine. All toxic.
