Hello! I'm new to the forum, and was wondering about proper storage of wheat berries.

I only have 50#, and I have the freezer space, is it alright to keep them there? Currently they are still in the bag that I bought them in.

I would not do it if you intend to ever sprout them...
Wheat berries should store just find in sealed buckets.

I store them in the freezer just because I do not have a basement or cold storage area. I have not tried to sprout them but they will be perfectly find for flour.

Welcome, DearAbby :)

They would be fine in the freezer. I imagine they would even sprout again. I haven't personally tried this, but wheat is grown in wintry states, and there's plenty of "volunteer" wheat that comes up from the previous year, so it seems like freezing would not ruin germination.

I freeze all my grain as it comes into the house, even that for sprouting. I don't have room to keep it frozen, but everything is rotated through the freezer for 3-4 days, to kill any *hitchhikers*. I've never had any problems with sprouting; Its possible that long term freezing might cause a different outcome, though I doubt it.

Oh, and Welcome to SS!
