wow!

interesting about the shine article where she said that packing her kids lunch was "privileged".... a million years ago when we had to buy lunch we got an angry glare from one of the parents b/c eating at school was "too expensive" and considered a treat. now i guess it where its cheaper!?!

wow.

our Grandma was the head of the school meal program in her district. they actually COOKED food. real food. all of the lunch ladies were grandmas that made real meals.

years later one of the younger ladies chatted with Grandma and told her they dont cook anymore.. they "fix" whatever weird frozen stuff they were provided with. everything is prepacked and just needs to be heated up.

no wonder all those kids dont know what veggies are.....

School lunch is only cheaper if you qualify for low-income assistance. Otherwise, at the public school my kids used to attend, it was $3 a day. I was not paying $6 a day for my 2 kids to eat pizza, corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets and chocolate milk. Seriously, these were the only menu items, they just kept rotating them. Yes, they could choose white milk, but what kid would? Don't even get me started on "Pizza Hut Day" and "Weinerschnitzel Day." And you're right about lunch ladies, they don't cook. They microwave whatever is sent to the school each day.

Oh, and if the kid doesn't like the main course option, they can choose an Uncrustable -a commercially made peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a Gogurt.

Tamlynn, did you notice that school lunches are served on disposable styrofoam trays now too?

My dd's school lunches go for about 3 bucks too. She has been taking her lunch to school since she started kindergarten.

Now, when I was a kid I craved the school lunches! My parents were vegetarians and my mother was not a very good cook. :sick I remember walking into the school doors and smelling the yeast rolls baking and the potatoes boiling for mashed potatoes with gravy and soft buttery rolls....:drool OH MAMA! All I had was a paper bag with a mashed peanut butter and bananna sandwich on stiff dark brown bread....every single day :sick.

Now days it isn't even cooked at the school. It is all premade and prepackaged in plastic. Lord only knows how they warm it back up at school...I'm guessing its microwaved.

My cousin, also in SoCal, took this pic of her school lunch when she ate with her daughter this week:

She was very impressed with the fresh fruit and veggie selection. Some schools do have them available.

Yep foam trays. Wouldn't want to make the lunch ladies do dishes. ;)

What I think is weird are the milk bags. They don't serve milk in cartons here. You have to stab the plastic bag with a straw and you can't pick it up. I guess the plastic bag is less waste.

This is what her daughter choose to eat that day:

Have any of you seen Jamie Oliver's show? He's that "Naked Chef" fellow from Britain. Anyway, he goes to this town that is known for being that most unhealthy town in America (per some governmental survey) and he's trying to help the schools to serve healthier foods to the kids. When he was touring the kitchen, the head cook actually told him that they don't use the stoves hardly ever!!! That breaks my heart. The potatoes they served were potato pearls made with TONS of preservatives.

It's on tonight. There are already two threads about it :)

Both of my children get free lunch at school,...needless to say I rather them pack lunch though. The food they serve these kids is unquestionable. In the last week, both of my kids, which go to seperate schools, has had stomach issues with the food they have been served. Both came home throwing up and severe stomach pain,..even though the schools denied it, it was the food. Many children went home sick and my children were taken to our family doctor,..whom agreed it was more than likely the food. This with the aspect of the "junk" they serve is very disturbing. They did go with "whole wheat" breads,.and they say they arent serving salt or sugars,..even though on the menu for breakfast they are having doughnuts and for lunch they are having pre-made frozen burritoes loaded with sodium of course. Everything is loaded with salt due to everything being pre-packaged processed foods! Yuck! :sick When I went to school we had actual old ladies in our lunch rooms making us homemade foods,..desserts and all. Not today,...it is very sad. My kids pack and eat a lot of PB&J sandwiches,..but they get their fruit and homemade goodies if need be. This whole program with public school lunches should be revised,..and quickly!
