so, i had never heard of Temple Grandin until i starting seeing ads for an HBO movie based on her life. i watched it last night and was extremely impressed, with her story and with the movie.

making of HBO film

wiki on Ms. Grandin

her webiste

her insight into humane animal slaughter is wonderful. there was this great quote in the movie where she says something like "if we didn't eat cows every day they would just be funny looking animals in a zoo. but we owe them the respect of treating them humanely." she's the first person i know of who advocates animal slaughter and has still been given an award by a certain group we can't mention.

now i just have to get ahold of some of her articles from the 70s!

I watched it too... WONDERFUL movie...

I started watching because I didn't see anything else on, and within 5 minutes I couldn't have turned it off.... loved it!

I have just heard of her recently. right now, one of the books I am reading is: The Way We Eat--Why our Food Choices matter. It delves into the lives of three different families, and takes a close look at their food choices. Going by what these families buy and why they buy them, they take a closer look at where those foods really come from, and the fallacies of some of the claims on those foods. I believe that quote was in the book also.

I first met Temple when she was speaking at an Autism conference 15 or so years ago ( I work with multi-handicapped children) and found her to be a very interesting speaker. I have read all of her books both on Autism and on animal husbandry. I got to hear her speak again at an American Livestock Breeds Conservancy(ALBC)conference, when she spoke about handling and moving animals. Excellent information and really deep perceptions about the way animals respond to humans.

I read her book -Animals in Translation- a few years ago. Wow, What insight! She is an amazing person! This is a must read. I was not aware of the movie-I'll put in on my must watch list.
