Yesterday evening, after a day of rain, freezing rain, and sleet, we went out to close up close up the coop and found that one of the chicken doors had broken and partially closed. One of our hens had been trapped outside of the coop for who knows how long. The old bird is one of our first three hens and the trio has long since quit laying. We keep the three as pets now and do our best to keep them in relative comfort during their "retirement".

The poor thing was ice covered, shivering, and lethargic in the corner of the yard, trying to keep warm. We wrapped her up in a towel, and brought her to the house. We placed her in a box, in the bath room and put an electric heater in the room, on low.

This morning, when we went to check on her, we found that our oldest dog (Shilo) had climbed into the box during the night and was cuddling with her.

She has recovered and is now doing fine, and back with the other girls in the coop. Shilo got an extra biscuit this morning (after a bath to get the dried chicken poop out of her fur).

Good dog Shiloh. Glad to hear it was not a Chicken biscuit. :D

So does that mean dogs are now 'chickens best friend' instead of mans?

Aww, good dog! (I'm afraid our Jack Russells would gladly eat a chicken)

Thanks for sharing ... nice story. :)

My dog would do it for a cat, maybe, or a goat. But probably not a chicken.

Good dog, and glad your hen recovered. :)
