Lately I have been recieving emails from a political party. One that i have never voted for, regarding our new HST. ( combined tax of our previous PST and GST). this tax has gotten many ontarians enraged, (rightfully so), and now, one of the opposing parties has started emailing me propaganda (for lack of a better word). I have never subscribed to this mailing list, nor would I.

Isn't there some law about this type of spam, or code of ethics--especially one that a political party might adhere to?? Ow would one find out about things like tis?

I'm kinda peeved about recieving spam from a political party, as you might have noticed. :p

If there is a law, would it work against crazy elderly aunts that like forwarding political spam as well? :/

Lol, an aunt I would just put on my spam list. I think it is totally tacky for a political party to send spam. (more tacky than an aunt, although that is tacky too, sorry.) If you want, you can give me her email addee and I can send her spam :p :gig

I get stuff from political sites I don't agree with, I might glance at it for amusement value, but that is what the delete button is for. I get tons of spam, it just gets deleted unread.

I don't think political parties or their candidates have ethics anymore. I am sure there are rules somewhere for everything. I just don't think any of them know or care what they are.

I have two e-mail accounts. One I use for signing up for stuff, like say Amazon dot com. THAT is my spam account. The other I guard with my life and I use it ONLY as an email account. The "private" one is a series of letters and numbers that would be very difficult for a computer to guess.

To expand on this for non-Ontarioans reading this, the problem is not so much that they have combined the taxes, it's that in the process they have added 8% tax to quite a lot of things that did not previously have the provincial tax (for example electric bills, home repairs and construction...)

and now, one of the opposing parties has started emailing me propaganda (for lack of a better word). I have never subscribed to this mailing list, nor would I. Isn't there some law about this type of spam, or code of ethics--especially one that a political party might adhere to??
Sorry, but in Canada you cannot legally opt out of recieving political paper mail, so I seriously seriously doubt there is any law protecting you against its electronic (or phone) version.

The best you can probably do is to start bugging the party's headquarters about it, and see if they can remove you from some of their lists -- you might try an approach like "I am on the fence about your party, sometimes I think I might want to vote for ya, but this spam is driving me NUTS and if you don't find a way to remove me from your lists I am going to be awfully peeved at you by next election time"

Good luck though :p
