We chat about trading and barter---but what do you really do?

I am trading a bunch of pork chops with Barb (the dairy) for beef.
I want some big roasts and chuck cuts for soups and stews.
will be doing this tomorrow

I trade eggs for honey from a friend.

last year Tony traded sausage for a new fishing rod.
Tony trades sausage at the market for rabbit...those rabbits are delish!

I trade veggies for other veggies I don't grow....I like that. Means less work and more variety.

I trade goat milk soap for tons of things all the time..LOL

so what do you all trade literally?

is it an important part of your living--or just a great bonus when it happens?

Well I've given everyone I know a sugar pie pumpkin or two.

I have a dear friend who I traded a chicken pair for a Rouen duck pair. She has been a real BIG help with my first "big girl garden" in the Pacific Northwest too. Hopefully I will have more to trade with her next year...it seems like I am on the recievers end of the friendship at the moment. I got bags full of heirloom tomatoes, kale starts, more tomatoes! I don't have much to offer her except a good horseback ride!

I have a hair stylist friend who is going to give me a hair cut for a horseback ride. :D

I have traded a pumpkin and a dozen eggs to my neighbor for helping me (showing me how really) clean out my chimney.

My other neighbor got a doz eggs and carrots this summer and he and his wife gave me a bunch of beautiful cucumbers in return.

Last year when I had bushes full of huckleberries, I took them up to a restaurant and they gave me a few free lunches out of the deal. They also got a bunch of pears from me too. I had a lot of nice (free) lunches last year, right on the water. This years huckleberry and pear crops aren't all that "pretty".

My hubby and I trade therapeutic massage for a number of things, some one-time trades, some ongoing. Haircuts, accounting, housecleaning....I got my barn wired for electricity, and had a lot of electrical stuff done in the house. I used to trade for horse-shoeing. I've traded jewelry for dog grooming in the past.

I wish I could trade more animal stuff. I've traded a little milking so I can go away for milk and kefir.

I've been given gifts of things like canning jars and produce, for which I have reciprocated with eggs, cheese, and goat's milk soap, but not as a formal trade. I've traded a few perrenials for ones I needed.

I would love to do far more bartering. I need to develop a better network. Thanks for the thread and the reminder. On my to-do list!

I regularly trade eggs for apples, cornmeal and whole-wheat pastry flour with husband's cousin.

I sometimes trade veggies for my friend's biscotti.

I often swap eggs and produce for labor or as thank-yous and gifts. This year, we gave a load of sweetcorn to a friend, who several months later gave us 3 bushels of apples.

We supply husband's aunt with eggs, who has often shared raspberries, rhubarb and other garden goodies with us in the past.

Mainly, we just give things away, but people are so nice and often find ways to *pay* us back. :)

Oh I forgot the ultimate trade: My tiller for my milk sheep! I also traded an English saddle for a western saddle.

ETA: Sorry I just had a "duh" moment, the title is Trade Foods!
