Hello all still hanging out in Mt. Weather is beautiful and dh finally hit the jackpot in the trout department. :clap:clap Tonight I tried to cook up my first half dozen on the grill. I forgot Peddlers recipe so I googled some grilling directions. Butter, season grill on each side about 12 min total. Mine took a bit longer the wind is reeking havoc on my bbq. Anyways. This is where the trouble begins.

How the heck do you separate the meat from the bones? I managed to pry the back bone and lg rib bones out. But there were so many little ones left behind. I know some people eats skin and some bones but all 3 kids under 8 almost choked to death. :barnie

The flavor was great meat tender but I just couldn't get it off the little bones. :idunno

Ok, so what did I do wrong? Dh and Ds are heading back out to fish, I think we may need to catch and release.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks, gina

I don't know about grilling.. but my brother cuts the head off, slices the belly, cleans of the inside, then fries them up with seasoning. When its done he uses a fork to pry the skin off by the tail, then rolls the fork along the sides towards the head, rolling the skin up on the fork. Does that make sense?

Then he puts them all on a plate, then we all take what we want off both sides of each fish with our forks. Thats how he does his fish, but thats the only thing he cooks.

Sorry I can't be of any help. :/

What kind of trout is it??? Brook trout? From memory, after it is grilled, you can just lift up the tail segment of the skeleton, and the bones should just lift right out. the meat should just flake right off the bones.

I even asked my dh to see if he had any tips, and he agreed the meat should flake right off. sorry I can't be of more assistance.

As Ms North said take the tail end and pull up (actually your fish will be laying flat so you are pulling to the side but away from the fish) and towards the head in a steady gentle motion and all the the bone structure should come out.

Another technique is to use a butter knife and go alone the spine and gently loosen all of the meat away from the spine and then lift/pull the meat down and away from the spine and ribs...the whole side of the fish should lift right off the bones.

Also if you pan fry them, as mentioned, remove skin, don't eat it fish deposit toxins in there skin, using a fork pull the meat down the sides. From the back to the belly gently, remove small bones, enjoy.

I think we may need to catch and release.
:hu

Shall I send you some ground hog via pigeon carrier service? :gig

Seeeeeee, should have brought me along to be your trail Chef. :plbb I'd find some wood to place on the fire while grilling, like apple wood, hickory is really nice. :weee

Thanks all. Dh is still catching but I am freezing them now. They are brown trout and we are on a lake. If that matters. I am sure it just takes some practice and they are a bit small which may be the problem.

Yes Jay, times like this I wish we were camping with a personal chef. Sure would make my job easier. Or at least someone with fish experience. Uhh??? No thanks on the ground hog.

Ok so promise me you won't laugh. OK maybe a little is ok. :gig
My dh just came back from fishing with another bag of fish. He was talking to a guy at the fish cleaning station. Turns out their not trout at all. Some white lake fish and not really that great to eat. Duhhhh!!!! :smack

I am not telling the kids. They were so excited to be "trout" fishing. Now what do I do with them???

Two words; Trail Chef

Also, at one of our vacation homes, and our campsite, I keep several picture ID books of birds, plants, snakes, animals, and fish. Just for this reason, cause I will be the first to tell you I don't know everything about the woods and stuff. I like to learn, and as time goes on, I will learn what I need to.

Fish jerky maybe?

ETA: I am laughing with you, not at you... :gig
