Japan is a long way away, and yet, just 12 hours or so after their horrendous earthquake and tsunami there was damage to the west coast of N. America. Boats damaged in the harbors of Santa Cruz, Crescent City, Brookings, and, I'm sure, other places. Idiots/thrill seekers/storm watchers had to be rescued after getting too close to the waves (as happens most winters during storms), and at least one has died.

Sunny (SS member), I hope that you and yours are safe in Brookings.

Quite the morning on the local news, wasn't it? My stations couldn't get away from showing the beach, even though not a lot happened up here by me. Looks like a little farther south was hardest hit.

All the footage from Japan was hard to watch, and they kept switching back and forth from Hawaii to OR to Japan so it was hard to know where things were happening.

The scary part is that we could have a Tsunami like that here if the earthquake were closer to us.

We live east of the coast range, so are in no danger - not from a tsunami anyway :p. But I know a number of people on the Calif. central coast, and have a brother with a boat down there - haven't heard yet if it was damaged, or even if it was in the water. We also have friends in Japan, between Tokyo and where the earthquake hit; so far the news has been good for those we know, only some roof tiles falling.

ORChick thank you for your concern.. We are all fine here. Where we live is actually right across from where the town usually evacuates to. The school area here is deemed safe.

One of my family members was a bit more effected by this. My Uncle in Law is a fishermen and he ran to rescue his boat. He got it out to sea and safe. But now since the ports have been destroyed he has no where to come back to. On our town newspaper website it says that some fishermen are stranded at sea with no where to go.

The most damage is just to our port that I know of. Its been reported that 4 boats were washed out to sea. Along with some of the docks. I guess Crescent City californias port recieved more damage than use.

I dont have TV so I dont know how much other damage may have been caused. I dont even have a radio that is in the house. Just my car. So, have not heard of any other damage yet.

There are some videos of our town on youtube. I will try to link to them so others can see some of the damage. Nothing compared to what to Japan. I wish them all well..

I live north of San Francisco, so we get SF bay area news. They showed the Santa Cruz estuary all morning. It was amazing to watch the force of the water hit the docks and tear the boats off their moorings. Many capsized and many more were washed out to sea. The docks got pretty well torn up too.
