I am posting over here so I won't be asked why I have chickens if Idon't know how to take care of them.

I had a hen who hadn't layed an egg for quite some time (around Oct.). The last thing she laid was several white masses. Some sounded like the was smashing egg shells inside them. She showed no signs of distress so let her be vs culling her. My chickens are my outdoor pets.

She developed what I thought was a protruding uterus mid Nov. I isolated her and got everything "back in" a few weeks ago. I would let her outside free ranging with the others when it was all clear but kept her isolated at night so the other hens wouldn't peck at her if something should go wrong again. Of course it did, about three days after everything was normal. But this time, it appeared that both her uterus and intestine/anus were pushed out. It was slowly getting better and she was eating and drinking (ACV added water). Would put neosporin on the the mass and vaseline under her to keep that part from getting so sore from dried poo.

I checked on her this morning and all seemed fine. This evening she was walking like a penguin. Her tall on the ground and she would lean up against the workshop or a fence. She still ate bread crumbs and drank but there was something very wrong. My DH did the deed this evening and we opened her up to see if I could figure out/learn what went wrong. Inside her was a hard large off white/ivory mass. Would that be a tumor? If so, I can now see that because she was pushing so hard to poo around that mass, that she stretched everything out.

The other option is was she egg bound (walking like a penguin) is a very good sign? Would egg bound look like a mass. "I cut it open and it looked like it started with a small mass and layers were added to it as it grew.

Yes we did the right thing and didn't let her suffer but I am trying to learn from this experience. Sorry I don't have any pictures, it was pretty upsetting. She was my first hen in 18 months that has gotten sick.

Thank you for any input.

I'm no sick chicken expert. I've had them off and on my whole life, but none got sick. Killed off by stuff but not sick.

I just wanted to say I'm sorry.

Eggbound. We had a hen with serious bunding, and we did not know. She got very sick, and when we did the necropsy, we found huge amounts of fluid buildup, and large whitish objects just like you described.

:hugs I am the girl who takes chickens to the vet (shes an avian vet who has little hands on experience with chickens, so mine are her guinea pigs) so I think you did everything right. It sounds like egg bound to me. Every chicken is a learning curve, just remember that :)

:hugs Aw, I wish I could tell you what happened, but I've never had this issue here....yet. No matter how great we take care of our animals, stuff happens. Please know that you gave her a great life and kept her as comfortable as possible and I am convinced that hens know when they are loved. She was eating and drinking on her last day, so she did not suffer, it sounds like. Maybe a bit uncomfortable, but they don't eat when they hurt. Please take some comfort from that.

Yep, it is safe to come here with these questions and any others, we always have lots of hugs :hugs and will cry with you for your pet chicken. Even when we have no answers.

I'd love to see a picture of her in happy times if you have one to post.
