I am starting to get curious about making vinegar. Are there other fruits which can be used instead of, or in addition to, apples? For example, peaches, pears, berries, citrus?

I have never thought about any of this before, so am eager to learn.

anything you ferment into wine or beer can be lacto-fermented into vinegar.

Such as? I have heard about hops and I know that grapes make wine, but since I do not drink, I have absolutely no flavor experiences from which to draw.

So, again, what else can vinegar be made from besides aples?

Hi Kris.

As far as I know many many different kinds of fruit juices can be made into vinegar. A really easy way to make some is to find a variety of vinegar with the mother culture still intact, and mix equal proportions of fruit juice and vinegar. Just like some ciders and wines will sometimes turn to vinegar, so will this, after several months it will start to change.

There are actually a couple of vinegar making threads around here somewhere.. If you tried the search option you might find them.

The search feature helped a bit, but did not answer my original question.

Sorry?

'Although wine making can be a tricky process, using grapes or other fruits to make vinegar is actually pretty easy, as this article by Kristie Leong points out.'

Other fruits. Isn't that what you asked? :p

That search feature.

Why is this causing a problem? I have never even thought about making vinegar before, and I am asking a simple question, hoping to be able to ask followup questions as well. I am seeking interaction, so that I can learn.

The search feature yielded posts on adding vinegar to fruit to make flavored vinegar.

The article you quoted was good, but not specific enough. Again, I want to talk to someone who has done this and see what I can learn.

Have you made vinegar from scratch using other produce than apples or grapes? If so, let's discuss these questions: Is the process different with different fruits? Are there some fruits that will not make vinegar? Does it take more days for some fruits? Can you mix fruits, such as watermelon and lemon, or is citrus never okay?

If you have never made vinegar with fruits other than grapes and apples, thank you for your direction.

Just about any fruit that has sugar, any grain that has a starch that can be converted to sugar and many plants as well. does your screen name mean that you claim to be a chef? Trot down to your supermarket and look at the vinegars my hick store has 7 not counting the white vinegar. What do you have that you might want to make into vinegar. because I sure am not going to sit here and list all I have made and try to describe the flavor to someone "I have absolutely no flavor experiences from which to draw."
