Learned this weekend from my gourmet cook friend that she uses ice cold, unflavored vodka in leiu of water in her pie crust recipes etc. The vodka bakes out and makes the crusts even more flaky than if you use water.

Just thought I'd pass that on. :)

eta: can't spell :/

I just learned that, too. They demonstrated it the other night on "Cook's Country".

Now isn't that interesting.

I use a recipe from years ago that has a beaten egg and vinegar. It's always flaky, even when I roll it out way too thick. I might have to give this recipe a try, too.

One more reason to keep vodka in the house - "Its for the pie crust, dear ... really" ;)

My daughter brought over a huge jug of vodka that someone left at her place when they had a Halloween party. I told my husband that I was going to make vanilla. He looked at the jug and mumbled something about 'that's a lot of vanilla'.

But I did make some homemade Kahlua that was pretty tasty.

I use vodka for tincture making. I haven't done it in a while, but the last time I needed it I had DH go into the liquor store for me. Doesn't look good when a hugely pregnant lady waddles into the liquor store for a gallon of vodka!

I love vodka crust - I use vanilla vodka and is is yummy. This is the only pie crust that I can successfully make and it is fantastic! Learned it from America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Illustrated.

Thanks for the tip, I would never have guessed. I'll have to try that. We keep vodka in the house as well. I make my own extracts and tinctures. I also use vodka in a scented body spray that I make, as well as bug repellant, and air freshener...and the occassional screw-driver ;)
