I was just thinking, emergency preparedness doesn't necessary mean a world wide emergency, sometimes the emergency can be on a personal level, right?

In other words, I'm totally dragging my feet in packing mine and the baby's hospital bag.

I've done this 5 times already, this will be my 6th run - but it seems like every baby the recommended list has grown!

What did women do before Ipods, mp3 players, and lap tops???

So I guess what I'm asking - bare necessities. I don't want to pack my whole room.

I'm thinking of something like this for me:
gown
bathrobe
toothbrush
hairbrush
shampoo
toothpaste
outfit to wear home
nursing pads
sanitary pads

plus the camera and laptop and a book or two to read

for baby

going home outfit
baby book
blanket
carseat

But I'm also thinking I should have a "just incase you're in labor and deliver in the car bag" What should go into THAT bag????

no, I haven't done a search online.

I was thinking yarn to tie the cord? sharp, sanitized scissors to cut cord? clean towels. The bulb syringe (for clearing nose and airways).

A prepaid phone is a good suggestion.

And yes, we'd continue onto the hospital to get checked out

My wife and I discussed this with our doctor many years ago. Besides the recommendations, she prescribed two Valiums for me to keep in the kit. :/

Doesn't the hospital provide sanitary pads and charge you a bazillion $ for it?

They probably do, but - and don't laugh - I take my own because I'm REALLY picky and don't like the mattresses they provide for the women to wear!

An aspirator to suction out the nostrils and mouth.

A large sterilized rubberband to tie off the cord to stop the blood flow from the placenta.
I read it is better to do this and wait to let the medical personal cut the cord.

A few towels.
