Through Azure Standard, we buy http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/
$50 or so for a full gallon.
:drool

The other day though, we picked up a little jar of NOW Healthy Foods brand, and were very impressed :thumbsup

I get mine here- they e-mail you with sales and free shipping deals and are very easy to work with. I was getting the quart jars, but I expanded to their bucket this last shipment. It is the one thing in my soap that I really will spend money on (everything else can come from the supermarket unless I want to get fancy with shea butter and other exotic oils).

If you want to get the good stuff make sure it says VIRGIN on the label. If it doesn't it is highly refined. You can get it at Walmart of all places BUT you want the stuff that is sold with the vitamins and not the stuff by the lard.

I usually get mine at Vitamin Cottage. Before they opened i was ordering it from www.netrition.com

The good stuff for supplements is always labeled as Extra Virgin.

Extra Virgin means cold, fresh pressed. This produces pure white oil that smells like coconut, and sets up at less than 70 some degrees (I forget just exactly what the set point is), which means in the summer it will go liquid.

The other stuff, NOT labeled this way, is hot pressed from dried coconut (copra). It is somewhat yellowish in color, and smells sort of oily and funky. It is not good for supplemental purposes, but IS good for cooking. Why?

Because when you cook coconut oil, it loses the fresh smell and ends up just like the hot pressed stuff anyway! And the hot pressed stuff is much cheaper. Still much better for you than most refined oils, and FAR better than shortening (which you can use it in place of).

So buy for what you will use it for. Cheap stuff for cooking, expensive stuff for hot chocolate, biscuits, toast, etc.

We get Nutiva Extra Virgin. It is available in organic or non-organic. Either is good. I usually order it from Amazon, where I can get the BIG jars in bulk. Got 4 of those (about half a gallon each) for $60 the last time I ordered.

You have not mentioned what you want to do with it yet. Are you going to drink it? Cook with it? Use it in soap making?

Probably use it for baking/cooking mostly.

Then buy the refined. Unless you want the flavor.
The raw is anti bacterial, anti viral and anti fungul, but heat kills all that goodness.
We make raw fudge, put it in smoothies, use it as a lotion ( and shhh we keep a small jar by the bed :hide )
For cooking, baking and soap making we use the refined.
Just steer clear of hydrogenated ;)
