Whittling

Do we have any whittlers here? I love to whittle when I am at work. I have a lot of down time and it's something to keep my hands busy. My wife has a big collection of hearts that I have whittled for her out of various pieces of wood.

Whittling has always intrigued me. A boy I knew growing up loved to whittle and he was very good at it. I think his grandfather taught him to do it.

I've always wanted to learn but I don't know where to start.

I used to whittle when I was a boy with a pocket knife. Everybody seemed to play around with a piece of wood maybe because we 'd see the cowboys do it on old movies. It definitely seems to be a dieing art form today. Glad to hear someone is still keeping up with it.

Grab a pocket knife and a small piece of wood. The only other thing you need is an idea. If you're creative with your hands, it'll come to you. The first heart I ever whittled for my wife was a small heart made out of an old paint brush handle!

Rae, that is quite a creative thing for you to do. I often see small pieces of wood and love turning them over in my hands. I've never thought about whittling them. Good for you to turn this into a finished product.

So that's really all there is to it? I might need to try whittling out for myself! It certainly sounds easy and straight forward. I'm also good at working on small projects.
