I tried sourdough last week. made the starter, thought it was ready, made the dough, lett it torise only to find out it didin't rise (after wasting 5 cups of flour--doh!!)

So, I have nurtured my starter, fed it, loved it, and now I am ready to make the bread again. Praying that it will rise this time!!

Wish me luck!!!

Good luck! Let us know how the sourdough turns out.

One of dh's co-workers gave us 3 pkgs of Amish Friendship Bread starter. Since everyone I know already has tons of starter, I kept all 3 pkgs. Today I am making the breads, and will giving out the baked breads instead of the starter.

Thanks!

Where would one (like me) get the friendship bread starter. I remember years ago(like 25) my mom had some going but let it die out. I keep putting the bug in her head to look around for stuff like this for me, but haven't come across anything. Maybe I should google it to see if I can start it myself.

Good luck miss_thenorth!

Hubby and I have been sort of lazily batting around the idea of starting our own sour dough starter. Let us know how it goes! If it turns out well, I'll probably be asking you questions later ;)

Well, --it didn't rise AGAIN. I'm bummed. The dough was bubbly--I fed it and cared for it allweek. It all looked good. I don't know what I did wrong. That;s two batches wasted. I'm not so anxious to try it again right now.

If you look on byc--Frugal posted a pictorial on sourdough. That is the recipe I am using.

My kitchen in around 68F, I kept my starter on top of the fridge. It looked good--bubbly--everything. i put the "bread" to rise in the oven--which is how I rise all my bread. All my yeast breads rise. This one didn't AND this is the second time I tried it. I did it last week with the same results. I figured I didn't wait long enough for the starter that time, so I fed it all week, and it really DID look good. I don't know what else..... all I knkow is my arms are achy from kneading it, and all for nothing. :hit

I looked for the recipe but couldn't find it. I have never kept up with sourdough but have done it at odd times.
So I don't know if I'm in sync with your recipe-
My Mom's recipe for starter was :
1 cup sugar
4 c flour
1/2 c mashed potato
Potato water to thin

Combine to make a thin batter in crock (no metal)- leave in warm spot for 48 hours then refridge for use later.
She also used yeast with the starter to make her breads.

The closest I ever came to making bread with out yeast at all was to make salt rising bread which had to raise a looooong time before baking.
