Saturday was sleep over day. We had waffles slathered in homegrown strawberries. Then 11 year old granddaughter and I went picking black raspberries in the woods. She then cooked and processed 7 cans of black raspberry jelly. I should hear how the jelly turned out soon. One can didn't seal so...
Welcome, Lyssa!
Wow, from central Texas to Alaska! That's quite a gardening jump. Ya'll must love challenges to take that leap. Best of luck to you and glad to meet you here on SS.
Ditto with the lime. Garden lime or lawn lime is great for sweetening areas that grow more moss than grass. I have one area that needs an application of lime at least every other year for grass to grow.
I apply with a seeder or fertilizer spreader, usually first thing in the spring to get the...
Sorry, I just stopped here to see what the smart people had to say. Nothing I can do to help.
Anyway, have you considered colorful bottles. I am picturing a blue, red, etc. big wine bottle with the smaller end cut enough to fit over the socket and the larger end cut at an attractive angle for...
With half an acre it really doesn't matter what you grow, you will have to supplement feed for most farm animals over the winter. Your post doesn't say where you are located. Here in south-est, central-est Wisconsin we can get three cuttings and in a good year four cuttings of alfalfa.

It is that time of year here in south-est, central-est Wisconsin. Morel time. Much of this afternoon was spend hunting the elusive mushroom.

Welcome, Jennylea, from a fellow mother, grandmother and gardener who is endeavoring to become self-sufficient. Working as a family can be a good way to garden. I hope you find it as addictive as most of us do. Glad to have you with us.
Chelsea, thank you and thank your husband for your service to our Country. It is true that the whole family serves when a family member is in the military.
It is good that you start learning and thinking about what you want before you find your land. It can be an exciting adventure, but take it...
Welcome to Sufficient Self.
I haven't taken the plunge and started raising cattle although I've been considering getting some Belted Galloway. Dexters would certainly be a good choice as well.
Many people don't believe in plowing and insist that lasagna gardening is the only way to go -- that is preparing the garden space in the fall or early spring with layers of mulch that you plant through. That keeps the weeds down since you don't disturb the soil
I prefer not to plow or till...
Only year seven? I compare the construction of my house to Johnny Cash's car. We started in the late 1970's. We are still working on the basement, and I can show you where things in the living areas are still not finished (and probably won't be since they don't seem important to spouse anymore)...
