    Broodies on the Homestead

Everyone warned us about water moccasins when we moved here but all we've seen around the house and coop are big ole rat snakes. I don't mind them as long as they stay away from the coop. DH did get a copperhead after him when he was mowing but even a copperhead can't take on a lawn mower. I am...

What did you do in the garden today?

@Hinotori nice! I picked a couple of Hungarian peppers yesterday and I saw some little bells growing. Also the beans are blooming. Tomatoes are getting ripe on the volunteer plant. I need to dig what little potatoes I have but it keeps raining. If I don't mulch the garden soon the weeds are...

What do you do to cut expenses down?

It cost so much to have meat processed I would have went that route too. I'm still hoping to get some butcher ready critter for a decent price. Our Walmart has decided to close and the only grocery store raised it's prices already.

    Broodies on the Homestead

Well our last little Swedish Flower got out and the other chickens got it. So far the hatchlings are staying with the two moms. I let them out to move the pen and those two moms were going ballistic on the other hens. The two roosters ran off. Finally while moms were fighting we grabbed the five...

    Frugal Alternative Cat Litter

That reminds me of the time the cat got in the garden and decided to climb our fence which we had electrified. The poor kitty was on it like the Garfield cat you see on car windows and couldn't let go. I had to run and turn off the electric. The poor cat laid around for two days and never did go...

I have a house full of hungry boys. I save a lot of money by making snacks for them. I will make up a huge amount of pancakes, biscuits for snacking. Also I always have popcorn kernels on hand. In the summer they can chomp on garden fresh vegetables and even in the winter carrots. They love...

    Getting acclimated to country

When Daddy passed it was a long drawn out process. He was in the hospital for a month. Family drama galore. I made a long list of chores and worked doing them until I finished weeks later. It kept me busy, gave me something else to concentrate on and when I was finished I was ready to remember...

Creating more nutritious free range for your flocks

Our place is three acres of lawn, ponds and surrounded by woods. We have happy yard-birds too! A lot of wild fruits like blackberry, passion fruit, berries off poke plants, mulberries, elderberries and off thorn bushes and hickory nuts if any get crushed. They spend most their days scratching up...

What did you do in the garden today?

Yes they are all over the our place too but at least the ones in the garden are safer. The chickens run by all the time with dangling legs hanging from their beaks.

What did you do in the garden today?

I a whole bunch of tiny little toads in the garden. I'm hoping they like ticks! I've started throwing chicken feed around the outside of the garden fence in hopes that the chickens will keep some of the insects away if they get in the habit of patrolling the perimeter.
