Elwood and family's journal of our ss journey

There's a really cool city park in Winterset, Iowa. It's not too far off of 35N just south of Des Moines. John Wayne's childhood home is there (very close to the park entrance), and the city park has a maze made out of shrubs with a sundial in the center. There are very nice areas for a picnic...

wyodreamer - we're not in Wyo any more

Aw, so sorry to hear one passed away. Even when it is expected, it's always a sad moment, much more so when it is unexpected. I hope the others continue to do well for you. I'm really glad you mentioned getting chicks. I had a hen sitting on a clutch of eggs for almost a month, without any eggs...

    Forestry Mulching

I bet every time you step outside and see the difference, you are thrilled all over again! We get vines and briars and wild grape vines like that here too (oh, and Kudzu too.) They sure can make a tangled mess FAST. But how cool that not only is it cleaned up, but mulched at the same time...

Elwood and family's journal of our ss journey

It's a big park. Maybe you can lose her!:gig The last time I was there, everything got shut down due to lightening. My FIL lives very close to the original farm where the James brothers grew up. My husband's grandparents are buried in the military cemetery at Fort Leavenworth. @Farmfresh lives...

WW2 Rationing Recipes - Canadian and British

@Marianne In the dutch sauce recipe it says "milk or household milk" (or fish stock.) Do you have any idea what the difference was between milk and household milk?

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

Didn't can today but I have a whole box of fresh Georgia peaches almost ripe enough. I'll have the jars ready and waiting by tomorrow. I did dehydrate some peaches, pineapple, and bananas today, and made 4 loaves of banana bread.

Elwood and family's journal of our ss journey

I'll miss you by about 10 days in the KC area. Tons of history there, some very good food, family and friends. It's a great stopping point!

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

Thanks @sumi ! Somehow I missed your notice, and I pulled up the website this morning, saw the picture and thought, "Hey, that looks just like our flowers!" :gig I can't remember if I posted a picture yet or not, but lately in the evenings, we've had tree frogs plastered to the outside of our...

    Duck hatching day!

I have 4 Indian Runners. @Beekissed has Runners and I think, 1 Pekin. She says it sounds like laughter when it quacks!:D Here, the ducks free roam in the garden. The chickens free roam in the yard (they have about 6 acres or so to roam since the neighbor always throws stuff out for them so she...

    Duck hatching day!

Nice pictures! And you seem to have plenty of room for them to roam too. Very nice! You seem to have more than one kind of duck. How many do you have total? Here are a few pictures of our Quack Pack from yesterday:

    Duck hatching day!

I took mine down to the creek for the first time yesterday. They had a GREAT time digging up the bottom and generally playing in the mud and water. The spot they were playing in was just under the hawks nest so I stayed to supervise. I'll try to add some pictures later. @Jeffeff95 I hope you...

wyodreamer - we're not in Wyo any more

I like this idea too. I was going to get some this spring but waited too late. I like the idea of getting them now and then having cool weather for when I want to cull them. I'm glad your chicks are doing well.

Elwood and family's journal of our ss journey

Happy Trails! I've had to move many times, and it does have the one good part of showing you what things are really important and worth keeping over all others. (I also pack well, and can fit an amazing amount of STUFF into a Yukon!) I hope the doctor's appointment goes well, and that your...

    What's for dinner?

I've never canned it, but I'm not sure why it couldn't be (except maybe for the hamburger?) My normal recipe is double this one, and fills a crock pot. I usually make large pots so I can have quick meals during the week. (The rice tends to absorb the juice over the week and it becomes more of a...

    What's for dinner?

@FarmerJamie that's one of our favorite "soups" except that so often I make it too thick and it's more of a stew. My recipe is slightly different but not enough to make it worth typing it all out. :)
