Hmm, Recipe? I'll try.
Peel (if you want) and grate a big cucumber. Squeeze some of the juice out with your hands. Dump plain yogurt (About 2-3 cups, depending on how cucumbery you want it) in the bowl, sprinkle in maybe 1/2t salt, about the same amount of dill weed, maybe 1T olive oil, and...
I use my monster cucs to make tzaziki. It's a greek yogurt dip with grated cucumbers. It's super easy to make.
I like it with pita chips, pitas, or as a dipping sauce for potatoes. Yum!
The bee books I have read say that honey never goes bad. In fact, someone found some honey in an Egyptian tomb and it was still good.
Depending on the pollen the honey was made from, it might have been dark to begin with. Some honeys are lighter or darker than others naturally.
I use honey...
On my local craigslist there was a posting selling water kefir grains. You need to use a bunch of stuff I had never heard of, as well as..I think it was either corn syrup or sugar. I suppose the milk kefir eats the sugar from the milk, so water kefir has to have som added sugars. But how is it...
Ahh, well, I don't know about the OP, but freezer space is at a premium here, and I am raising lambs and chickens for meat, so they will have to go in the freezer, plus there are a lot of fruits and veggies that only taste good frozen.
And, last winter there were a lot of storms and we had a...
I just found this thread, I recently made and canned cajeta. Fridge space is at a premium here, so it couldn't live there for long. I used less sugar, as goats milk tastes sweeter to me, and I accidentally added extra cornstarch. It turned out thick like a soft taffy. So good.
I picked a...
ORChick, that sounds so good. I never really thought I would be a saurkraut lover, but now it seems I can't get enough of it. I'll have to screw up my courage and try making my own noodles. :)
Ok, I made my first batch of saurkraut, as cabbage in in season now in my area. I put a water filled ziplock over the salted and packed cabbage and after 5 days it smells delicious! I don't know if it actually smells gross or if it is just me. I love strange smells, like sheep urine...
Anyway...
I just remembered another way I like to use pears, pear jello. I use pear sauce or puree and gelatin, and whatever other things I like. It produces a thicker set that I like. It's especially fun for kids. Applesauce works too.
For dehydrating I slice two big sides, then two skinny sides, so the core is a square. The smaller peices will dry faster. Leave them slightly chewy and flexible. They aren't good overdried, which is easy to do. I have left them moist and never had a problem with mold.
I like fruit leather of...
So, just so I understand, you put raw potatoes in the jars, and the pressure canninng cooks them, so when you open them they are ready to eat?
Your jar of potatoes does look very nice. I am eager to hear the results. I may just have to try canning potatoes if yours turn out.
Hello Thewife. I always add grape leaves to my pickles, and so far they have always come out crispy. I just use whatever grape leaves I can find, wash them off, and put them in the bottom of the jar. Make sure you cut the ends off the cucumbers, as the blossom end contains an enzyme that will...
The other day I made cajeta from goats milk, and it was so incredibly delicious! I accidentaly added extra cornstarch for the amount of milk I had. I also added 1/3 less sugar since goats milk tastes sweeter to me than cow milk. It turned out rich and chewy without that mealy too-sweet flavor of...
Yes, I would love some grains. Have you made it with goat milk? And after it's done fermenting, do you ever add fruit? I have only ever drank fruity kefir from the store.
Should I send you a money order or check for postage? Let me know. Thank you so much!
I would also love to know how to keep fruit from floating. Last year I made the most delicious peach blackberry jam/jelly and the peaches all floated unattractively to the top.
Tonight I canned my first pickles of the year. Well, cucumber pickles. I have already pickled asparagus, beets, and turnips.
I have more cucumbers, but I ran out of vinegar, so they have to wait until tomorrow.
The two on the end are bread and butter pickles, which I have never eaten or...
Wow, it really must have been going around last week. I sat and cried late into the night several times last week. My life isn't as complicated as all yours seem to be, but I am raising a bottle lamb by remote, and between driving and feedings, I was only getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night, and...
I spread it between peices of French toast, it was pretty good. It's also good on a grilled cheese sandwich, especially if you add garlic and herbs.
And thin sliced apples. The apples make a nice crunchy contrast to all the cheezy goodness. You'll want to peel the apples though, the peel is an...
